AHC: Jimmy Carter comeback in 1984

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to have James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. secure a third nomination for President, and win a second nonconsecutive term with a POD starting on January 20th, 1981.

Good luck and Godspeed.

As I recall, Carter's reputation was pretty abyssmal in the first few years of the 80s. At the '84 GOP convention, for example, speaker after speaker enthusiastically conjoined the names "Carter" and "Mondale", to obvious good effect.

Your scenario would require not only that Reagan be discredited, but that Carter be rehabilitated. Maybe if details of an October Surprise are released, revealing that Reagan deliberately prolonged the agony of the hostages in order to secure his own victory. Reagan then becomes the most hated man in American history, and people think "Aw, gee, the hostage crisis wasn't really Carter's fault after all", and he gets makes a comeback in '84 on the sympathy vote.

Not that I believe in October Surprise, but that's about the only scenario I can come up with.

Pretty much what was said here is the best way to have this happen.

You could also have the '81-'82 recession go longer and deeper, which would hurt Reagan badly, or have a scandal along the lines of Iran Contra break out in the first term instead of the second. In either of these scenarios, you'd need pretty much all of the top candidates of the '84 primaries (I know 'the '84 Democratic field was weak) to sit it out in order for Carter to have a chance at the nomination though.
