As the title says. After the fall of the Soviet Union have the Russian Federation by present day become politically dominated by Social Democratic party(s) similar to Swedish Social Democratic Party and other Scandinavian social democratic parties.

POD should preferably be after the Soviet Union breakup in 1991. If that is too hard… than how about a POD no earlier than 1970 (but USSR still has to fall apart in 1991 as OTL)?

Might need more than the twenty extra years to help set up a social democratic party in the first place.

Their OTL performance wasnt exactly very impressive. The actual social democratic party had less members than the Beer Lovers Party, and they were forced to merge with a Pro Yeltsin party just to get into the Duma.

So yeah, hard. The equivilant of getting not even a third party, but more like a fourth fringe party into power.

Yabloko was a mess, and didn't have much in the way of good leadership.

The problem was that they were also quite pro-Western, at a time when anti-Western sentiment tended to translate to more votes. So really, for Yabloko to do better requires both better leadership and a platform that makes them come across as more Russian than Western.

Isnt Yabloko more of a laissez faire type rather than social democratic?

But yeah, Russian politics were heavily dominated by personalities rather than parties during the early days, since most parties ended up being formed pretty recently. Exception being the Communists of course, which helped them consistently get second place. And Yabloko didnt have that strong leadership that appeals to voters.

So it seems to achieve the challenge you would need to 1) have the social democrats led by a charismatic personality or 2) have a more pro-western attitude in early 200 Russia or both 1 and 2.

Any way to get this? Are there any prominent communists who could, in theory, have become proponents of social democracy post 1990?
