  1. What if Tasmania secedes from Australia in 1928-9

In OTL Thomas Murdoch introduced a bill to parliament in 1928 for Tasmania to secede from the Australian Commonwealth which was defeated. In 1929 the Dominion League called for a secession referendum. What would happen if either of these had succeded? How woud Tasmania go by itself?
  2. What if Australia's republic referendum passed in 1999? How would things be different?

I'm imagining the referendum proposes a republic with a directly elected, mostly ceremonial president replacing the governor general in the constitution. In OTL the decision for the president to be appointed by the government is commonly said to be what handed victory to the monarchists.
  3. Late 19th century: What if ethenol or hemp was the primary fuel for cars

Ethanol (from corn, sugarcane, beat, etc) could have been the most popular fuel for cars. Diesel himself created his engine for using peanut oil. In the beggining of the car revolution henry ford had several farms where he grew soybean and hemp believing plant-based fuels would be the future of...
  4. George Cove wasn't kidnapped in 1909?

In 1909 George Cove was kidnapped and his budding solar power company collapsed not long after. Solar power wouldn't be commercially viable again until Bell Labs solar cell in the 1950's. So what if solar energy became a commercial success in the 1920s, 30 years earlier than in OTL? What I've...
  5. WI Chiffley promises to end war-time rationing ahead of the 1949 election

My theory: By beating Menzies to the punch this could take the wind out of the sales of the Liberal Party and secure a narrow victory with the help of the Communists and Lang Labor. Chiffley gets to nationalise the banks like he always dreamed and Australia starts down a social democratic...
  6. Challenge: Make modern Australia a scandinavian style social democracy

Perhaps a different, more comprehensive Harvester case would result in a system closer to thie nordic model than in OTL? Our equality system didn't 'go arentinian'but it can certainly be better.
  7. Challenge: Make modern Australia a scandinavian style social democracy

My guess would be some kind of grand compromise which makes Australia's economy like norways: heavily resource based but with a more equal distribution of wealth. I just don't know enough history to make a call. Any POD after federation is acceptable of course. How woud this impact...
  8. Challenge: With a POD no earlier than 1270AD, have the Mongol's conquer Europe

Try to keep the ASB's on a leash as best you can. Yes I know the Mongol's are past their prime at this stage, that's the challenge.
  9. What are some good post cold war POD's for Australia? Or in general?

KRudd doesn't get coup'd in 2010 is interesting. Would the mining tax have stayed in place? Not sure what POD would cause it though. The mining lobby was going to have him offed one way or another.
  10. What are some good post cold war POD's for Australia? Or in general?

Hasn't it been argued that nothing really changes if Australia was a republic? Same politics just with a ceremonial president?
  11. What are some good post cold war POD's for Australia? Or in general?

POD's after 1990. Looking for inspiration.
  12. Feasibility check: Hawke government ditches ANZUS in 1985

From Wikipedia: "In 1983, the Reagan Administration approached Australia with proposals for testing the new generation of American intercontinental ballistic missiles, the MX missile. American test ranges in the Pacific were insufficient for testing the new long-range missiles and the United...
  13. Feasibility check: Protests against the Iraq War succeed in Australia

What if the 5 February vote of no confidence was a lot closer in the house of reps? Say The independents support it and a few Nationals abstain. You probably wouldn't pass it but it might be close enough to make him reconsider?
  14. Feasibility check: Protests against the Iraq War succeed in Australia

What POD would work? Would it drive a wedge between the US and Australia? Is it the end of ANZUS?
  15. AHC: Have a Green Party come to power somewhere.

The best bet seems to be the Greens leading a coalition in Germany. Seeing as Germany essentially runs the EU (at least it did before carona) what kind of differences could a Green Germany make in the EU?
  16. AHC: Have a Green Party come to power somewhere.

So If the Grand coalition collapses they would hold new elections?
  17. AHC: Have a Green Party come to power somewhere.

Either as the dominant member in a coalition or as a majority government. For reference here's a wiki page that lists the various contemporary green parties: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Greens
  18. Can anyone recommend a good Australian republic timeline?

I've heard that the republic referendum of 1999 is something of a cliche POD but I can't find any timelines about it anywhere.
  19. Feasibility check: Australia refuses to send troops to Iraq, leading to a diplomatic spat.

Or failing this, are there any other way ANZUS/Aus-US relations might collapse post 1990? We've been practically joined at the hip since the end of the cold war.
  20. Feasibility check: Australia refuses to send troops to Iraq, leading to a diplomatic spat.

The Iraq War would have gone on with or without Australia. What POD would have Australia stay out of the war? Would the ANZUS treaty survive or would the Americans not care? Would they kick us out of the F35 program? Would they call us mean names? Discuss.
