  1. Languages survive which OTL became extinct

Regarding the Paleo-Balkan or non-Greek Hellenic languages...a theory was recently proposed that Burushaski is descended from Phrygian, spoken by mercenaries who settled in the area after Alexander's conquests, and twisted beyond almost all recognition by twenty-three centuries of divergent...
  2. Russia LONG TERM (for at least 100 years) conquered and ruled by someone else

I imagine if the Norse never conquered the native Slavs of the area that became known as Rus, then perhaps the Khazars would eventually have been able to become the ruling group in the area, leading to a completely different "Russia" than in OTL.
  3. WI Eastern Orthodox Christianity underwent a Reformation?

Firstly - why was Eastern Christianity never affected by the Reformation? Surely many of the problems in the Western Church were shared by the Eastern one. How would a movement to reform the Eastern Church come about, and where? (And when?) Could it ever become the majority or state religion...
  4. Base Maps from 550 BC to Modern Day, all in UCS!

I really like these patches, but could you please, please provide a key and/or an explanation for them? All the different colors and outlines are meaningless without one.

In any case, the arms used in the flag by MissWhatsittoya are perfectly appropriate for a flag and should not use shading, as that is not how heraldry is represented on flags, and it would look terrible if it were not flat.

Hmm, the idea of a multiethnic "Greek" state formed after the collapse of Byzantium, but in the absence of a Turkish empire, gives me an idea for a map. Or at least a flag.
  7. Possibility of a Turkish state in part of OTL Bulgaria?

It's interesting you mention the Pomaks. I was just reading about them this evening, and it turns out they had two separate attempts to create their own country in the late 1880s and early 1900s: the Republic of Tamrash and the Provisional Government of Western Thrace.
  8. Possibility of a Turkish state in part of OTL Bulgaria?

Looking at ethnic maps of the Balkans in the mid-to-late 1800s, you'll notice that in northeastern Bulgaria, there are very large areas with a Turkish majority. How likely would it have been for these Turks to achieve an independent state apart from Bulgaria? Maybe something like this, or...
  9. Base Maps from 550 BC to Modern Day, all in UCS!

That's Marajo, which is definitely an island. Although, to be, fair, maybe the channel separating it on the west side is too small to show on a world map.

Maybe you could add an outline showing the former borders of Saudi Arabia? Also, I'm curious, did you have a POD in mind for this map?
  11. Map Thread IX

That's a nice map (I wonder how Saudi Arabia could have gotten that large...), but I'd like to point out that the central state would probably be called Nejd, not Riyadh.
  12. Flag Thread III

No, the Lombard Kingdom of Italy existed before heraldry, and had no other emblem. You're basically free to make one up, if you need one for a surviving Lombard Kingdom.

You listed "Swahili" as a member state in a political union. Swahili is a language.

I think a way to improve the version using only one shade of blue would be to add a white fimbriation around the taegeuk.
  15. Romani homeland in East Prussia after WWII?

Well, I'd certainly imagine that moving to the state would be voluntary. There would be a number of advantages associated with a Romani state, even if it meant giving up itinerancy. Firstly, it would be a place where Romani would be able to escape discrimination and achieve full opportunity...
  16. Romani homeland in East Prussia after WWII?

I know this is probably unrealistic, but I just want to speculate. Let's say that sometime before the Soviet occupation of East Prussia, the Western Allies propose that the Romani ("Gypsy") people be given a state in East Prussia after the removal of the German population (much of which had...

Regarding the Baltic Union: Why has no one proposed the black Nordic cross on white, briefly used by the United Baltic Duchy in OTL?
  18. Flag Thread III

Hm. Okay. That's true. I still think it would be more likely for the Soviets to take the Icelandic blue, white, and red and put them in a stripe at the bottom of the flag in order to fit in with the standard SSR flag scheme. I guess I was just thinking of the Yugoslavs' attitude towards...
  19. Flag Thread III

I doubt the Soviets would permit a cross on the flag of an SSR.
  20. Map Thread VIII

No, no, no - you're all wrong: Beedok was speaking in Panlatina, an artificial Romance language created to facilitate cooperation between southwestern European forces during the resistance to American rule, and is now spoken by exiled political dissidents from the region on Tierra del Fuego...
