What if, rather than granting independence to Algeria, France handed it over to Morocco in exchange for the rights of French in the country to be protected and some generous agreements with regards to basing rights and oil exploration?

A Map of Morocco, Algeria, and Spanish Sahara (which Morocco conquered OTL) as one country.

Any particular reason the French would consider this?

Morocco wouldn't be interested. I mean they'd certainly take some of the land offered, irredentism was rising there for some time, but it would have been largely limited to the Western Saharan Districts as shown on the map here. There is also the fact that Morocco was funding the NLF in their insurgency, which leaves open the question as to why the French would be willing to put forward such deal in the first place …. anyway, the Moroccans would see it as just payment for freeing Algeria, whereas the NLF would consider it a betrayal.
Expect a major war between the Moroccans and Algerians within a decade.

The most likely way for a United Algeria and Morocco would be for a left-wing coup to happen in Morocco and the two nations merge together.

It would be interesting seeing an ATL Morocco include along with Western Sahara both Algeria and Mauritania, with all the complications it entails for Morocco to attempting to integrate the latter two.

Because it's preferable to an anti-western Soviet-aligned state taking power which wouldn't let France retain much of Algeria's oil wealth.

France might also be able to keep Oran here, perhaps.

Did the Moroccan state at that time have any capacity to rule these populous Algerian territories? How can Morocco guarantee anything? We would be.more likely to see this overextended Morocco fall to revolution.
