American Honor System

WI...

After the revolution the new American government didnt scrap the honor system idea.

Im not really seeing any kights, dukes, or earls, or anything hereditary. But what if there was like an 'Order of the United States', or state orders, that were endorsed by the government.

Ideas for titles?

IIRC veterans of the ARW formed or considered forming an "Order of the Columbia", you could simply have this effort succeed

Well you would need to change the whole reason behind the revolution for that to happen. All of the nations enemy's were Lord this, Sir that and we wanted nothing to do with it. Its hard enough to say "All men are created equal" with slavery but to have the upper class officially different was another matter.

We could make lords elected, as in our congressional system today. An exlord would be 'Sir Something' for the rest of his or her life. It would really make people look up to public service!

The Order of Columbia, the Untied States' equivalent of the Order of Canada. Essentially, an honorarium much like a Knighthood. To our Canadian Fellows, what do you call a recipitant of the Order of Canada? People like Martin Short?

All former and current Presidents are referred to as "His/Her Excellency" for life.

All former and current members of a Presidential cabinet are referred to as "Minister" for life and/or can end their name with the suffix "MPC" for "Member of the Presidential Cabinet".

All current and former Senators are referred to as "Lord" or "Lady" for life. All current and former Representatives are referred to as "Sir" or "Dame" for life and/or end their name with the suffix "MC" for "Member of Congress."

None of the above titles are passed on to children, etc.

Those who are awarded military medals for valor may use a suffix at the end of their name:
Medal of Honor: MOH
Distinguished Service Cross: DSC
Silver Star: SS
Bronze Star: BZS (unless you want BS at the end of your name!)
Purple Heart (PH), etc.

Civillian orders can include something like this:
Order of the Columbia: For outstanding services to the Federal Government, recommended to and selected by the President. Those awarded can end their name with the suffix "OC"

Order of America: For outstanding volunteer services in the United States. People are nominated on a yearly basis to a committee who select the most worthy candidates and are reccomended to the President for approval. Those awarded can end their name with the suffix "OA."

Order of the State of ---: For outstanding service to the government of a particular state (or at the local government level). Recommended by the Governor of that state to the President for approval. Those awarded can end their name with the suffix "OS"

So, a President who once was a member of Congress and won medals in the military would have something like these:

His Excellency, Sir John Doe, DSC
His Excellency John Doe, MC DSC

I htought presidents were entiteled to 'Your excellency' for life as it was, its just no one did take advantage of it

I imagine GOvernors and mayors
The Distinused/Honerable Governor John Q Public
The Venerable Mayor John Q Public

*Random note* Does 'Lord Mayor' sound like a neat title?

Governors (In MA at least) have "the hnoroable".. For example, I believe the current Massachusetts governor's title is The Honorable Mitt Romney, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.. Not sure about the President, though.
