WI: Shalmaneser III defeated and killed in the Battle of Qarqar

So, this thread reignited my interest in the concept of an Israelite polytheism, and I thought that this would be best served by a triumphant Israel, especially under the Omrides, and I found this battle between a coalition of kings and the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III, who incidentally was also the first to mention the House of Omri, referring to the kingdom of Israel.

The Battle of Qarqar was ostensibly an Assyrian victory, though apparently Shalmaneser took several years after to conquer the area, and until the reign of Jehu to demand tribute from Israel. So what if Shalmaneser was defeated and killed in this battle, cutting short his long reign?

I'm not sure how plausible this is, and sources are scarce, but so it goes.
