All right, what fresh hell is this?

Rude!

No, but seriously. Another project, when you can't even keep to a fortnightly schedule on Weber's Germany, let alone a TLIAM?

Reread the thread title, mate.

Okay, so it's a TimeLine Over A Month, because you're a gorram special snowflake.

Worse yet, it's a TimeLine (that updates at least) Once A (calendar) Month.

...I think that makes you the single outright laziest poster on this subforum.

Hey, I'm honest about it.

Okay, so that aside, you've got the Taishō Emperor, Grand Duke George of Russia, Prince Henry of Prussia, and...King Edward VIII?! Stop trying to rehabilitate Edward VIII's image! It's not a thing!!

Says you!

Wow, that's a deep and thought-out response. Look here, what's this doing in post-1900? You're going to need pre-1900 PoDs to get Grand Duke George and Prince Henry on the throne.

Yeah, but the last of the 5 PoDs occurs in the 20th century.

...FIVE?!?!?!

Christ mate, indoors voice! Let's get it started, shall we?

=======

Hello, everyone! As I hinted over at Weber's Germany, this is my crack at an Early 20th Century timeline. This is going to be much more loose and experimental than Weber's Germany, with no particular set aim beyond a avoidance of the horrors of World War One, the October Revolution, and the Second Sino-Japanese War. I don't intend for it to be utopian per se, but I reckon it'd be nice to have at least one reality without the bloodshed of those turbulent events.

I'm far from an expert from this period (as if I am for WW2 :rolleyes:), so I'm open to suggestions and corrections along the way. Feel free to let me know if I've made mistakes or potential interesting butterflies from the changes made in the timeline.

As I said in the question-and-answer above, it's once a calendar month, which theoretically means you could get two updates two days in a row (e.g. Feboobarb 32nd*/Smarch 1st) or with a pause of almost two months in between (e.g. Feboobarb 1st/Smarch 31st). If I can't support both this and Weber's Germany, it'll be this project that gets put on the backburner. Better put this out there so that people don't get disappointed. :eek:

PRINCE WILHELM OF PRUSSIA DEAD IN TRAGIC HORSE-RIDING ACCIDENT

twiDrUo.png

Prince Wilhelm in Scotland, 1862.

HRH Wilhelm, Prince of Prussia, son of HRH Frederick, Crown Prince of Prussia, passed away at the age of 8 following an accident during his horse-riding lessons. It is understood that during a fall his weak arm was entangled in the reins, causing the pony to land on him, killing him instantly. His state funeral is set to be announced soon. His death means that his younger brother Heinrich is now second in line to the Prussian throne, after their father, HRH Prince Frederick.

Don't worry, this isn't the only update this month! :p I'm splitting it into 5 parts, spread over the rest of this week, so that discussion will be easier.

Comments? :)

JAPAN ANNOUNCES NAME OF EMPEROR’S SON

160px-Imperial_Seal_of_Japan.svg.png

The name of first child of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Japan and the probable heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne, Yoshihito (嘉仁), born to the Emperor and Her Imperial Highness Empress Shōken on the 31st of the previous month, was announced yesterday in Tokyo. Rumours of the child’s sickliness have proven to be inaccurate, with Yoshihito demonstrating “energy and intelligence” in his first week.

=======

Interestingly enough, Yoshihito wasn't actually announced as Crown Prince until 1888, hence this slightly circumspect phrasing. He wasn't birthed by Empress Shōken, but The Sunday Times is following Japanese court procedure.

Yes, I actually check what days of the week the dates fall on, because I'm an enormous nerd. :p

RUSSIAN TSAREVICH SLAIN BY JAPANESE POLICEMAN!
TMepWMo.png

His Imperial Highness Nicholas, Tsarevich of Russia

Yesterday, HIH Nicholas, Tsarevich and Heir to the Russian Crown, was killed by Tsuda Sanzō, one of his escort policemen, following his return to Kyoto following a day trip in Ōtsu which marked the conclusion of a diplomatic trip aimed at the review of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the fostering of Russo-Japanese relations. Tsuda apparently drew his sabre and slashed at the Tsarevich, cutting a deep gash across his neck. In his failed escape he injured HIH Grand Duke George of Russia, whom the title of Tsarevich will now devolve to. Despite the best efforts of the Japanese medical staff, the Tsarevich had lost too much blood, and passed away before midnight on the 11th. Tsuda has been sentenced to death for murder. The Japanese Emperor has left Tokyo to pay respects to the late Tsarevich, expressing his deep regret at this “sudden, unprovoked and dishonourable act”.

========
Grand Duke George was famously known as the "weeping willow" of the Romanovs, hence "Emperor of Hearts". A "hidden" PoD is George not getting tuberculousis during his naval service, but not falling sick doesn't make international news. ;)

Nice updates! However, I believe the English convention for the Russian heir is simply Tsarevich, as in Tsar.

And how does the death of Nicky not lead to war?

Noted and changed. :)

In OTL, his would-be assassin got sentenced to life imprisonment, but the court of Emperor Meiji in TTL, in full grovelling mode while the Japanese government continued insisting it was the act of a lone, crazed, madman, and put even more pressure on the courts to apply Article 116, explaining clearly to the Chief Justice that war or peace depended on his verdict. Tsuda's boss "independently" committed seppuku to atone for his failings in selecting subordinates. Tsar Alexander III decided to keep to his winning streak of peace considering all this, also deciding it would be a waste of manpower and resources.

PRINCE OF WALES KILLED AT WEDDING OF SPANISH KING!
381px-Anarchist_attack_on_the_King_of_Spain_Alfonso_XIII_%281906%29.jpg

The chaotic scene yesterday, as the bomb thrown by a Spanish Anarchist detonated, killing The Prince of Wales and several others.

In a shocking turn of events, HRH George, Prince of Wales, was killed in Madrid during an assassination attempt by an Anarchist, Mateu Morral, on the Spanish King and Queen during their wedding. He misjudged his aim and overshot the royal carriage when he threw a bomb hidden in a bouquet aimed at killing the royal couple, and the bomb exploded in the stands, killing the Prince of Wales and several others. HRH Mary, Princess of Wales, escaped with mild injuries, as Prince George had apparently leapt in front of her to shield her from the explosion. A period of mourning has been announced, pending a state funeral. HRH Prince Edward of Wales, son of Prince George, is now heir to the throne.

========

Edward's Diamonds because he's also King-Emperor of India, and Kooh-i-noor was found there, after all.

That's all four accounted for, but there's still a 5th PoD (the "hidden" one for Grand Duke George doesn't count.) What could it be? :confused:

Find out tomorrow. :p

Would The Times really refer to Wilhelm's 'weak arm'? AFAIK his shortened arm was concealed from the public, so they would presumably not wish to advertise its role in his death.

You mean the league of moustaches... and that british guy.

But the TL looks promising.

We all know that facial hair is awesome in that period. :D

I'm just taking it as an extremely poorly kept secret, and one which doesn't really matter now that the prince is dead.

Final update for the month will be posted soon!

U.S. PRESIDENT SHOT IN RAILWAY STATION; UNDER MEDICAL CARE NOW
440px-Garfield_assassination_engraving_cropped.jpg

An artist's impression of the assassination attempt.

James Garfield, President of the United States, was shot at by a madman, Charles Julius Guiteau, while walking through the Sixth Street Station of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad, awaiting a train to his alma mater, Williams College. Only the rapid action of a bystander, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., saved the life of the President as he noticed the would-be assassin pulling his weapon out, shouting at the President to “watch out”. Nonetheless, this did not prevent Guiteau from successfully shooting the President once, grazing his side, before he was brought down by Roosevelt Jr. Garfield is now resting at home, having understandably terminated his visit.

Well, that's it for now. See you all in March. ;)

Garfield's presidency

I do not know much about Garfield's presidency but their survival in TTL
is likely to involve biggest changes would cause the deaths of future emperors, in Otl, since except for the Russian heir others had a more passive role in government of their nations (influenced but not taking decisions and ordering their implementation).

Which is obviously not the case for the American presidency, neither for man elected to the position of President of the United States.

While that's true, the United States wasn't exactly the global superpower it would be until the 20th century or so, or at the earliest from the Spanish-American war, so butterflies regarding court behaviour aren't too likely to stray too far across the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans.
