"Hello and welcome to Boston for the opening game of Group H at the city's iconic Kennedy Park Arena where River Plate take on Mexico, a truly mouth-watering prospect in what is arguably the tournament's Group of Death. So without further a-do let's get over to our commentary team.

River Plate win the toss and kick off

01: River Plate captain Stephen Valdano wins his first tackle up against Andrew Hamilton, a strong tackle robbing the big striker. But it's all Mexico in the opening moments as River Plate look to soak it up and hit on the break with that stellar front two.

06: River Plate may be playing a risky game with such an attacking line-up but the benefits are there to see as Leon Messing is almost through after a punt downfield. River Plate are three on three but the Chicago Corinthians striker can't gather it in close to the touchline. He then gives the ball away cheaply.

11: Incredibly nervy start from both sides, but especially Mexico. River Plate have quietened the crowd, they are not rushing anything and Mexico look a little rattled. They normally start games well, but not today.

11: PENALTY TO RIVER PLATE! Referee Enrique Simoes of the Brazilian Empire gives a soft penalty as Oscar Villa tussles with that man Stephen Valdano and receives a yellow card. Now then, this is a real chance...

12: AND IT'S SAVED! Lewis Suarez has to wait an eternity as all manner of delaying tactics are deployed by Rafael Lopez and co, and when Suarez does take the spot-kick Lopez guesses correctly, palming the shot away with his left hand. Great save - great noise!

14: Mexico have been handed a real left-off there, they've been poor in the opening quarter of an hour but now their fans are buzzing and Cesar Vialpando of Racing Club de Los Angeles has had their first effort - skidding a 30-yarder over the top.

20: Oh, what a silly challenge by Messing. He's booked for pulling back Mexico's Santiago Munez. He's protesting, but he has no right to, it was stupid and completely unnecessary. Can Mexico make the free kick count?... No is the answer to that.

23: GOAL! Rafael Lopez blots his copybook by coming for a corner and punching it clear, it's not convincing at all though and Suarez lofts it back over him and in.
RIVER PLATE 1-0 MEXICO

27: Now are Mexico going to respond? The midfield has been so packed at times but suddenly Mexico do open up with a burst of pace from Durand. He wriggles past a challenge, links up neatly with Hamilton on the edge of the box to create the shooting opportunity but his 'more power, less accuracy' mantra lets him down as he fires it wildly over the bar. Promising stuff though.

30: Some good old-fashioned wing play from Rory Buchan - who looks like leaving Buenos Aires United for Everton - as he skips away from his man down the left before pinging in an early cross. Messing controls it neatly and hits an immediate shot, a rising left-footed drive which arrows just past the top corner. That was very close indeed. The could have been two!

33: River Plate have certainly thrown a spanner in Martin Rodriguez's works, Mexico are playing at nowhere near the level they have should be with all this talent on display. On paper, this should be too tough to call, but River Plate are far and away out performing their opponents.

39: Head tennis on the edge of the box again as Mexico scrap away, but in a flash 'Los Verdes Grande' - or ' The Big Green' as Mexico's English speakers call them - carve open a chance. Esteban Carmona gets up on the overlap, beats his man and puts in a low cross, Andrew Hamilton gets in front of his man but his shot is well blocked at source.

40: River Plate's Jason Craig leaves an opponent on the deck with a big challenge in midfield and it all threatens to kick-off. He wins the ball but then clatters Munez with his follow-through and there's a crowd scene out there. Credit to the Brazilian ref though as he sorts it all out quickly and with the minimum of fuss, bar a yellow for Craig. Free kick to Mexico, miles out though.

40: GOAL! Durand takes the free kick with a long ball over the top and finds Carmona breaking into the box, he takes it on the chest wonderfully and gets a shot away which Jose Clemente saves well. The ball bobbles out to Hamilton, he has two defenders on the line but just about bobbles it into the turf and into the corner. Great goal sniffing. And we're all square!
RIVER PLATE 1-1 MEXICO

42: Oh, Carmona should be at the Olympics with that effort! the Reale Roma man propels himself five feet into the air after he was fouled by Buchan, but the free-kick comes to nothing.

45: Well a dull start, but things have started to liven up over the past 15 minutes or so. Lets hope the second half can pick up where the first has left off.

46: And Mexico get the second half underway.

47: Chase that! Not seen much of this from Luis Yates the Victoria San Francisco man as he just hammers a ball 60 yards down the park for Luis Sainz to chase after. Not great stuff from Mexico to start the half.

48: GOAL! Mexico summon up a second goal out of nothing, as Tomas Gutierrez whips in a corner and it's the big centre back, John Hernandez who climbs clear of Bradley Walker to head in at the back post.
RIVER PLATE 1-2 MEXICO

53: River Plate have been left a bit shell-shocked by that goal, and their fans in the stadium have been silenced as well. Max Lopez seems to be doing his best to get them going as he trots over to take a corner but they're a bit flat all. All the noise is from the Mexicans right now. How the tables turn!

58: It's opening up now as River Plate counter with Lewis Suarez down the right, he beats his man all too easily and flashes in a great cross which is heading for Messing until Hernandez cranes his neck and skims the header away. It's not over and the next goal is massive in this one.

60: Durand lines up a free-kick from 40 yards but he can't find the target, rattling a shot straight at Jose Clemente. A third for Mexico would surely have killed off River Plate, but they're still in this.

66: Messing may be a striker, but he's acting like a top class right back here! He tracks back diligently to get across and make a superbly-timed sliding tackle to stop Gutierrez in his tracks. Inside the area that one, no room for error. Cracking tackle.

67: River Plate threaten next and wow this is close! Leon Messing delivers the goods from out wide, Lewis Suarez gets up and flashes a header inches over the top. Very, very close.

74: Carmona goes to ground all too easily again and Rodrigo Cortez takes the law into his own hands, whacking the ball against the prone striker from a few yards away. Stonewall booking. Mexico need to be careful here, Villa was booked early on, so both their full backs are on yellow cards.

80: Lewis Suarez goes down the left and picks out Messing on the edge of the 'D', he sidesteps Carmona and fires in a shot which deflects off the Royale Marseille man, wrongfoots Rafael Lopez - but skids inches wide of the corner. That was dangerous!

82: GOAL! A bolt from the blue! The light blue of River Plate. He's had a torrid game so far but Leon Messing puts River Plate level after some defending which will leave the Mexicans in a cold sweat.
Mexico have two or three chances to clear their lines, but captain Luis Sainz tries to play a square pass to left-back Yates and Messing nips in, tackling the full-back before scuffing a shot into the corner. They were never out of this. Mexico went 2-1 up but they hung in and continued to threaten, and now it's two a piece in Boston.
RIVER PLATE 2-2 MEXICO

86: Rodrigo Cortez takes a whack as he clears a dangerous cross from Carmona and he has to come off, he's replaced by Cristian Montero.
Cortez limps off down the sidelines, taking his time and giving Valdano plenty of verbal grief in the process..

90: FULL TIME: Well it wasn't a classic, but what started as rather dull developed into an interesting, lively game. Neither side were at their best. Moments of brilliance on both sides tempered by moments of stupidity, but its a result which will for now leave everyone guessing about this group. Who, if anyone can take advantage when Neusachsen play Algarve tomorrow is anyone's guess. But for now, from Boston, its back to the studio.
