CLINTON WINS THIRD DEBATE, TRUMP LOSES CHANCE TO REVIVE CAMPAIGN-OCTOBER 19, 2016
TRUMP REFUSES TO CONFIRM HE’D ACCEPT CLINTON WIN

The third and final presidential debate has been widely judged as a win for Secretary Clinton over Donald Trump. Following Trump’s fall in the polls, the debate was a key chance for him to revive his campaign. But he failed to do that. Trump, as in previous debates, struggled to keep it up for 90 minutes. On an exchange on Wikileaks, a potential opportunity to play at Clinton’s vulnerabilities went to a dispute over Putin, and when Clinton called Trump a puppet of Putin he replied “No, you’re the puppet.” He refused to confirm he would accept the outcome of the election if Clinton won, an answer she called “horrifying.” And Clinton managed to goad Trump into an angry response, when she talked about her Social Security plan, and said she and Trump would pay more payroll tax “presuming he doesn’t find a way out of it.” Trump replied “Such a nasty woman.” The debate looks unlikely to change the trajectory of the race heading into the final weeks, with Clinton getting a solid lead as Trump flails.

GOP NOMINEE PLEDGES TO ‘DRAIN THE SWAMP’ IN WASHINGTON
90
The Republican nominee, Donald Trump, gave a speech at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where 150 years ago Abraham Lincoln had delivered his famous address. Trump used the speech to denounce Washington DC, and he vowed to “drain the swamp.” He promised a “contract with the American voter” to “to rise above the noise and the clutter of our broken politics, and to embrace that great faith and optimism that has always been the central ingredient in the American character.” Trump also attacked Hillary Clinton, alleging that there would be massive voter fraud (without backing his claim up with evidence) and that she “should have been precluded from running for the presidency of the United States.” Trump’s speech was overshadowed by his promise to, in his first 100 days, to sue all the women accusing him of sexual assault. It remains to be seen whether Trump’s pledge to “drain the swamp” will resonate with voters and give him the boost he desperately needs, or whether what will be heard is his unprecedented promise to attack his accusers and enemies.

Hillary Clinton has won the 2016 election. It was not a surprising victory, but it was undoubtedly a victory. After a bitter and divisive campaign, Secretary Clinton prevailed. She broke through the glass ceiling to become America’s first woman President. She won with 307 electoral votes, a close victory in the Electoral College, and a stronger popular vote victory that is set to become even stronger as millions of extra votes flow in. Clinton came back from a humiliating 2008 defeat to win the Democratic nomination, and finally, the presidency. The road was not easy, but Clinton powered through. After her tenure as Secretary of State, she started gearing up for a second run. The party rallied behind her, and she became the inevitable candidate, clearing the field of all but a plucky Vermont socialist. Clinton was battered by controversy, including her use of a private email as Secretary of State. She got a virtual tie in Iowa and a landslide loss in New Hampshire. Clinton recovered with big wins on Super Tuesday, though she soon suffered a shock loss in Michigan. Despite Sanders putting up a strong challenge, she was always in the lead and come June 7 she won all the delegates she needed to be the nominee. It was a bitter campaign against Republican nominee Donald Trump, but only once for a few days after the Republican Convention did she relinquish her lead. She soon regained it with a successful democratic Convention, in which the party rallied behind her candidacy. Trump was helpful, with his gaffes and lacklustre campaign hobbling his poll numbers, and he was unable to present himself to a majority of Americans as fit for the presidency. Clinton struggled through September, fainting at the 9/11 memorial ceremony, but the debates boosted her campaign. She resoundingly beat Donald Trump in all three debates. Trump meanwhile went into a meltdown as first his tax returns were leak, then a tape of him boasting about sexually assaulting women. The tape was confirmed by the accounts of over a dozen women. Trump, despite the anti-establishment mood running through the country, was never able to present himself as an acceptable alternative to Clinton. Clinton was hobbled by her emails and leaks by Wikileaks in the final stretch, but her weaknesses were ultimately less damaging than Trump’s. Clinton, unlike Trump, was prepared. Her professional campaign, outspending, out-debating and out-organising him, won the day. Hillary Clinton broke the glass ceiling. Trump was not coming out to concede. Still, he would not stand in her way. Hillary Clinton gave her victory speech. She declared "We have won a great victory tonight. This is a victory for all Americans. This is a victory for our common values, and our vision, because we are stronger together!" "I promise, to all Americans, whether you voted for me or not, I will be your President." The President-Elect said "We have had a rough campaign. And we need to come together as a nation. We need to make America whole again." She praised her campaign "I am so proud of the campaign we have run, together. You have worked your heart and soul out for this campaign. Thank you. Our campaign was never about one person, or even one election. It was about the country we love and building an America that is hopeful, inclusive, and big-hearted. And tonight, we can declare, with pride, that America is great because America is good. We’ve spent a year and a half bringing together millions of people from every corner of our country to say with one voice that we believe that the American dream is big enough for everyone—for people of all races, and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for LGBT people, and people with disabilities. For everyone. And I know, and this election proves, that fighting for what's right is worth it. I want you all to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion." She sent a message to those watching "And to all of the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams." We have broken the highest, hardest glass ceiling. And let us break through many more ceilings to come. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.(glass shaped confetti falls from ceiling, cheers erupt)" Making America whole again would be a very hard task indeed. Trump did not come out to concede. Later, he tweeted “MASSIVE voter fraud took place. Will not concede, election was RIGGED! Sad!” He released a press statement arguing that “I would have won a tremendous victory if not for the millions of people who illegally voted for Crooked Hillary Clinton. This election has been stolen from the American people. We will not stand for it.” Control of the Senate is uncertain, with the Democrats losing no seats and gaining Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, however the Missouri Senate race has gone to a recount(Republican Roy Blunt leads by over 3,000 votes), while Ron Johnson won a close and narrow upset victory in Wisconsin. Both houses of Congress will therefore be staying Republican. President Clinton will therefore be in for a struggle in advancing her agenda. Still, she broke this ceiling, so now there are more ceilings to be broken, including that of the Republicans. With a resounding victory, Hillary Clinton and the Democrats can celebrate, but must also plan for the challenges ahead.

Can't the mod that closes this thread just make a new thread? Like the Hall of Infamy and Spillover threads in Chat? Please can we not turning making a new thread into a dick-measuring contest that like in the American Politics thread.
I'd like to do so.
