Joseph Stalin (1878-1941) was the premeir of the Soviet Union from the mid 1920's to his death in 1941 at the Battle of Moscow. Remembered in Russia as a tyrant and the orchestrator of millions of deaths, Stalin's legacy is that of murder. Modern historians blame most of the problems suffered by the Soviett's during the Second World War on Stalin and his purges of the Red Army throughout the 1930s, and his incompetence after Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Feeling personally betrayed by Adolf Hitler, Stalin took over the command of defenses of Moscow, leaving many key positions poorly defended, allowing for the Germans to take the city. Once it was realized the battle was lost, Stalin attempted to flee Moscow but his vehicle was ambushed by German tanks. The man of steel, leader of the Soviet Union for nearly twenty years, died leaving the future of the Soviet Union in doubts.
