- | **James F. Byrnes** (1879-1975) was the Thirty Third President of the United States from 1945-1949. Served briefly as the Vice President under Franklin Roosevelt from January to March 1945. As President, Byrnes oversaw the surrender of Germany and Japan and the reconstruction of Europe and Asia. Perhaps due to his history of being a former Roman Catholic, Byrnes was soundly defeated by New York Governor Thomas Dewey in the 1948 election. After his presidency, Byrnes was an outspoken critic of de-segregation of the nation, seperating himself from the Democratic Party. He is noted as being the only former President to serve as a governor of his homestate, holding office in South Carolina from 1952 to 1961. In 1967, Byrnes played a pivotal role in the development of the conservative Constitution Party. After a long illness Byrnes died in late 1975. |
