Emperor Hirohito of Japan (1901-1945) was the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession, reigning from 1926 to 1945.

Early Life

Born in the Aoyama Palace in Tokyo, Hirohito was the first son of the future Emperor Taisho, with the death of his grandfather, Emperor Meiji in 1912, Hirohito became the heir apparent to the Japanese throne. On November 29, 1921, he became regent of Japan, in place of his ailing father and married his distant cousin Princess Nagako, the eldest daughter of Prince Kuni Kuniyoshi, on January 26, 1924. He acceeded his father to the throne on December 25, 1926 proclaiming an era of Shōwa (Enlightened Peace).

Hirohito's reign as Emperor was against the backdrop against increasing militarism in Japan, with the Imperial Japanese Army and Japanese Imperial Navy greatly increasing its control and influence on everyday life in Japan and on its young new Emperor.
