Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2004) ruled the United Kingdom from 1953 to 2004. During her long reign, the United Kingdom recovered from the devestation of World War II and continued its dominance as the worlds main military power into the twenty-first century. During her Diamond Jubilee, the Queen shocked the nation by admitting she was being treated for cancer. A year later the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth grieved when it was announced that after valiant fight, the Queen succumbed to the cancer in her sleep. She was succeeded by her oldest son, the Prince of Wales, Charles.
