 The current British overseas territories in the South Atlantic Ocean. Island nations that have opted to remain a distant part of the UK instead of going for full independence. These remaining overseas territories are: **Ascension Island**, **Saint Helena**, the **Tristan da Cunha** archipelago, **South Georgia** and the **South Sandwich Islands** archipelago. The current British overseas territories in the South Atlantic Ocean.  +The archipelagos are well-known for their high numbers of endemic species, with St. Helena as the prime example. Saint Helena and Tristan da Cunha are permanently settled. Ascension Island has a more temporary population, consisting of military garrisons, scientists and support staff, regularly rotating in tours of duty. South Georgia was once slightly settled, but has a temporary population nowadays, mostly scientists. The South Sandwich Islands are uninhabited, save for the occassional population of visiting scientists. All of these overseas territories are accessible via ocean-going ships, Saint. Helena and Ascension Island are also accessible via regular flights.
