Surinam 1795
In 1795, the Royal Army’s first large-scale combat deployment occurred when Manticoran forces sortied from the Caribbean Dependency to occupy the Dutch colony of Surinam on the northern coast of South America after the Netherlands fell to revolutionary France. This operation was conducted by the 10th Infantry Brigade, then the garrison force at Holy Cross. Although no Dutch resistance was encountered, the attached 7th Rifle Regiment performed well against the local Indian tribes; for these actions, the 7th Rifle Regiment was awarded the unit appellation “Royal”, becoming the first Royal Army unit to gain such an honor.
