 The protagonist is Nicole Gunther-Perrin, a lawyer in modern Los Angeles.  After having some things go wrong in her life, and experiencing what she believes to be overt sexism, she prays to her souvenir of the Roman gods Liber and Libera to send her to Ancient Rome.
