The POD of the TL concerns Col. John Laurens surviving the battle of Charleston (in which he died in 1782 at the age of 27). The TL then follows the gradual changes in American politics due to Laurens' influence. The TL's author explained his interest in the POD and the figure of Laurens thusly: “Laurens was a staff officer on Washington's staff during the ARW. He was good friends with Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette during the war. He died at the battle in the first entry. He is important because Laurens and Hamilton shared a fraternal bond. I was thinking a continued relationship might lead to moderating some of exigencies.”
