What he [Dougal Dixon] has done - with both AFTER MAN and THE NEW DINOSAURS is so exciting that I feel it deserves a special name of its own: Alternative Zoology.--
                        Desmond Morris,
Foreword to The New Dinosaurs, 1988.

Welcome to my Alternative Zoology page!  Although history is a very interesting area to think of What Ifs, nature is all around us everyday.  Today, genetic engineering is becoming a major 'battleground', just like nuclear power once was.  Who will win, the Neo-Luddites who would stop all genetic research, or the Scientists that are building tomorrow?  If genetic engineering continues to be developed, humanity will have finally refined what we have been doing with animals for thousands of years.  Once, it took generations of selective breeding to change traits, but genetic engineering offers the chance to make changes in the blink of an eye.  With such possibilities, why shouldn't we look back on the past, and ask what could have been?

Using our modern system of Babbage Analytical Engines, the Alternate Zoology website can now keep track of the number of humans, beavers, raccoons, cephalopods, elephants, and more that visit our site.  To get your own Counter, visit http://www.counterart.com.  The above allows for me to keep track of the popularity of this site.  Isn't technology wonderful!!

But, gradually, the truth dawned on me: that Man had not remained one species, but had differentiated into two distinct animals:  That my graceful children of the Upper-world were not the sole descendants of our generation, but that this bleached, obscene, nocturnal Thing, which had flashed before me, was also heir to all the ages.

Timelines and Alternate Histories

The Planet Vulcan.  Now Playing at a webpage near you, an Alternate History about Life on the Planet we know as Mars!
Birdwinia.  This is the Alternate History that got me into the Biological side of things.  Despite its age, I still have been unable to fully finish it.  But read what I do have.
Island of Mont.  Not by me, but by Tristan Jones.  This is put up with permission of the author, and is a combination of the multiple posts on the subject.  Enjoy!
Real Dragons.  Another Dragons What If, by Tim Martin.  Check it out, it's very interesting to see his idea on their evolution.  Enjoy!
Foreign Genesis.  A very original timeline that talks about the possibility of intelligent Raccoons!  Sadly it's not finished, but the parts there are interesting.
The Othermen.  This is a revised and extended version of the older Foreign Genesis timeline.  Still the same old intelligent Raccoons you know and love!
The Fe'e.  Here is another one from Tim Martin.  This time, let us turn to Somoa and learn about the possibility of intelligent Cephalopods.
The Rodent Empire.  One from the talented Seth Deitch.  He's been as busy as a Beaver working on this TL.  ::grin::  A must read.
Planet of the Apes, and Elephants.  Once more, we have the luck of having Seth Deitch submit a TL.  This time, let us look at the possibility of Humans and intelligent Elephants working together.
Singer of Songs.  An Alternate Zoology webpage exclusive!!  Read here first the Introduction and First Chapter of Seth Deitch's current book project.
The Bear Civilization.  Because of the popularity of The Rodent Empire and other TLs, your webmaster Agrarianist has tried his hand at Intelligent Bears.  Enjoy!
The Jomon in America.  One of the many claims of a Pre-Columbian discovery of America is that Jomon fisher-gatherers could have fled to America after a volcanic eruption.  What if the Jomon had been forced to flee in larger numbers, and flourish in the New World?
Agriculture in Australia.  An essay from Tristan Jones, who also wrote the Island of Mont TL.  I've added many Links that highlight the ideas in the Essay.
The Dwarf Civilization.  A look in the possible evolution of a hominoid race that could be called the Dwarves.  Enter the world of Homo diminuensis.

NEW!----------Alternative Zoology Suggested Reading List!

The Tesla Corner

I now have added a portion of my website to focus on the newly proclaimed Patron Saint of Alternate History, Tesla.  Everything here is set in the Alternate World of Gernsback, which you can read about in Alternate Earths.  Soon to come, essays on some of Tesla's strangest ideas.
St. Tesla.  Here you can learn the biography of the Man of the Century in Gernsback, and the newly proclaimed Patron Saint of Alternate History.  It's worth noting that he beat out Charles Babbage and President Chester A. Arthur for the position of Patron Saint.
Diathermy.  A strange medical idea popular in the past, learn of Tesla's work into the use of electricity in treating diseases.  A continuation of the St. Tesla-Gernsback TL.

Alternate Civilization

Why did Civilization evolve in the path that it did?  All of the major River Civilizations in the beginning of History had religion, does this mean that religion is needed for a Civilization to remain together?  The Inca and Aztecs were able to thrive without the Wheel, how long could they have continued if the Europeans did not come?  Starting with this article, I will examine Alternate Civilizations.  I will not involve real Civilizations from History, and most of the time I will not involve real Geography.  These are just hypothetical worlds, essays on how such a Civilization could have turned out.  Enjoy.
Alternate Civilizations: The Ril Ahno Civilization.

The Essay Corner

Various Essays that I've written.  Not true scenarios, but just brainstorming sessions in which I think about how things could have turned out.  I used to turn out one of these once a month, but I haven't done any in a very long time.  Hopefully I will get around to more in the future.
Alternate Cooking.  The year 1650 A.D. witnessed a revolution in the way Northern Europeans ate.  New ideas about diet and nutrition arose and changed the old way of eating into the modern diet that Americans are familiar with today.  However, this revolution did not take hold in places like the Islamic Middle East or the Spanish Empire.  This brings up the question, “What If Northern Europeans still held their original 16th Century tastes?”
Alternate Cooking II.  After reading over my first Essay, I decided I did not do enough on the Effects.  Too much was spent on the culinary tastes of OTL.  So come on and explore the alternate culinary style of the United States of American.  I will also bring up other possible 'What If's about Cooking, which might show up in another Month's essay.
Alternate Immigrants.  This month, I started off with an attempt to change Halloween, but instead ended up preventing the Irish Potato Famine.  I could make this into a full time line, although it would be just another Civil War or British Empire alternate history.  Next time I will try to be more original.
Alternate Holiday.  In honor of Thanksgiving, I do another attempt to change a Holiday we all love.  I don't get off track like with the essay of last month.  Guy Fawkes Day meets Thanksgiving, with an American twist of course.

I am ALWAYS looking for Alternate Histories to put up here.  As long as your AH has anything to do with a difference in Geology, Evolution, Genetics, Life in Space, etc. I'd love to put it up here!  E-mail me.

Return to my Other Alternate History Website:  Shades of History

We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library whose walls are covered to the ceiling with books in many different tongues. . . . The child does not understand the languages in which they are written.  He notes a definite plan in the arrangement of books, a mysterious order which he does not comprehend, but only dimly suspects.

LINKS

Alternate History Links

Dale Cozort's Alternate History Page.  One of the best places for Alternate Histories that aren't the same old WWII or Civil War alternatives.  One of the best sites about Alternate History around!
Alternative History at Suite 101.com.  A webpage created by a regular on SHWI, Bucky Rea.  It is a very nice place, with regular updates on links, discussions, articles, and more!  Check it out.
David Johnson's Webpage.  As this creative title states, this is a Webpage by David Johnson.  The graphics are great, better than this site, and all of his ideas are very original.  Check out Crocker Land, my favorite of all.
Institute for Parallel Studies.  With so many submissions from Seth Deitch, it's only right that we have a link to his very own webpage.  Check out Bromfkidor, and just a lot of interesting and strange stuff.
Lewis' Eclectic Pages.  Here you can find various Alternate Histories by Lewis Hutton.  Best of all, in my opinion, is a trip to an Alternate Earth, a world in which the vertebrates never evolved and arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms and other invertebrates rule.
Pteranodon's View.  A good place to look for not only Alternate History, but information on many of the world's cultures.  Go check it out, it's wonderful!
Uchronia.  The ultimate list of Alternate History books out there.  A must visit for anyone looking for a story with a particular POD, no matter when it was printed or the language.  You will find it here.

Science Links

Darwinia Books.  A nice place to buy books on Evolution, Darwin, and other related subjects by way of the good people at Amazon.com.  You can't have Alternate Evolution without Evolution.
The Human Genome Project.  The official site for the publicly funded consortium that's in the 'race' to uncode the Human Genome.  Not the only one, some of its competitors are selling stock, but it's the only one with a public database of information.
A Review of Man After Man.  I have yet to read this book by Dougal Dixon, so I cannot comment on this review at this time.  But it's related to the person who got me interested in Alternate Zoology.
Return of the Tasmanian Tiger.  This is the official site for the $80 million project underway to bring back the Tasmanian Tiger using the process of cloning and a preserved embryo.  An example of how far humanity has come, from causing extinction to reversing it.
