Writing Contest №9: Home Away From Home

Hello all, and welcome to the ninth in a series of ongoing writing contests, where any of the many members of our site can compete. The previous winner (in this case me) chooses a theme for our competitors to write a short story, description, or article, from the perspective of the timeline these events are taking place in. The public then votes on their favourite entry in a follow-up poll. The winner is showered in accolades, and receives the high honour of choosing the next theme. Despite being in the "Before 1900" section, entries from any time period are permitted as long as they fit the theme.

You can find the main thread here if you need some further examples, or if you're interested in being kept up to date for future contests. Entries for this contest will be open until August 24, 2020, at which point voting will commence.

For this, our ninth competition, I've chosen a topic that many alternate history aficionados tend to have a soft spot for: governments-in-exile, expatriates, and other diasporas. Contestants may write in any format or style they choose, as long as they are describing an ahistorical group that, for whatever reason, is separated from their homeland. Some examples might include a newspaper article describing the twentieth anniversary of the British Royal Family fleeing to Canada after a syndicalist revolution, a brief essay on the plight of the Paraguyan diaspora after their homeland was partitioned, or a speech on why Ethiopian fighter pilots are world-famous for being top notch international mercenaries.

And with that, let the writing commence!
