Although this is a rather small POD, let say Jesse Helms is persuaded by his advisors to not run the racist ads based on Affirmative Action and Helms is able to pull of a close win against Helms in the General Election? What path might he take in the Senate? Would he be considered by Bill Clinton for a Vice Presidential Running mate?...if he still wins the nomination(I doubt Gantt would run as he would only be two years into his first term). If not and we go with a very minimal butterfly effect and he does not challenge Gore in 2000, could he clinch the nomination in '04? Could he beat Bush? I think this is an interesting scenario that really hasn't been talked about.
