There should have been two polls. The best revolver of world war 2 and the best semi-automatic of world war 2. But there should be even more. The best combat handgun caliber of world war 2. Just to throw out a list of handguns and ask which is the best does not prove much.

M1911. For close in work, it had the stopping power and was tremendously reliable.

Seconding this. The M1911's one hold back was the size of the clip: seven rounds wasn't the best in the world. But then a ten round clip would weigh the gun down even more.

I would have to say it was the M-1 carbine it had a greater range then any of the others :D
Yes the M-1 carbine has to be placed in the pistol grouping for that is what it was designed as a replacement for .

A tie between the Browning Hi-Power and the Walther P38, both are rugged simple designs chambered in 9mm Luger and are still in use with military and police forces all over the world. The M1911 may have more stopping power, but in a warzone it's in your interests to wound the enemy rather than kill him because a wounded soldier takes up more of the enemy's time and resources than a dead one.

That may make sense with your main weapon but if we're down to pistols I want to knock him down, roll him over, and make sure he's out of action!
