First, a reminder of the challenge:
Flag Challenge #184: Mixed Up

Make a flag which is a deliberate hybrid of two pre-existing flags, such as the how the flag of Hawaii combines the flags of Britain and the United States, or the flag of Shetland combines the Scottish saltire and a Nordic cross.

The two flags being fused together can either be OTL flags, ones you've created for the challenge, or a mixture of both. If you do use a new design for one/both of the "pre-existing" flags this/these should also be included in your entry.

Good luck! :)

Submissions Period: 11 March 2018 - 17 March 2018
Voting Period: 18 March 2018 - 24 March 2018

Now the entries:

Entry 1: Japanese Vatican

Vatican City is invaded so all of the population flee to Japan, who is ittl more catholic due to more missionaries and Shinobi and Buddhist controversies. They form a state on one of Japan's smaller islands and the state eventually grows to eclipse Japan.

Entry 2: United Republics of the Pacific (1968-1996)
United Republics of the Pacific (1968-1996)
After a coup d'etat overthrows the Imperial Regime of Japan some time in the mid '30s, a republican goverment is introduced. The reformed nation seeks to partner itself with China and the US but only succeeds with the latter. The relationship with the USA grows strong, and together, alongside several other Pacific states such as Australia and New Zealand form a strong military and economic alliance. With a very fluid cultural exchange between Japan and the USA and an already common market, the 2 nations are ready to unite forming the United Republics of the Pacific. The new nation is a powerhouse, effectively dominating half of the globe. With an entire ocean to exploit, the URP is heavy on nuclear testing and off-shore oil rigs, causing devastating pollution, which affects the entire planet. After prolonged negative effects, a coalition of 20 countries attack the URP and defeat it, and split it back the way it was before.
The Flag is based on the Hinomaru and the Star and Spangled banner.

Entry 3: Belgae Republic
Belgae Republic

In this ATL, The low countries keep their old celtic culture, which survives into the modern day. Therefore OTL modern Dutch, Walloon etc. are based on Gaelic rather than their respective languages in OTL.

T
he Belgae Republic is one of the few surviving Celtic nations, Welsh, Cornish, Highlander and Irish have almost entirely been replaced with English and the Bretonic language in France is on it's way out too. However, despite having a long history with invaders from all around them, this hasn't changed their culture in the long run at all. Sure, modern Belgae does show a little bit of resemblance with the tongue of their neighbors, namely French and German, but they still have a very strong cultural and national identity that is entirely their own. If it wasn't for all the windmills and dams everywhere, you would think you were in wales if you got lost there.

The republic's flag has a saltire inspired by the flags of Scotland and Northern Ireland while the orange represents the Belgae peoples and nation as a whole (or just the orange from the OTL dutch flag). The stripes on the left are inspired by Brittany's flag, which in turn were also inspired by the US and Greek flags as a symbol of democracy and liberty.

Entry 4: Zion
Zion

The State of Jewish East Africa, commonly known as Zion, was formed by the successful Uganda scheme, and was named for the protectorate of British East Africa from which it was formed in 1906. Since its founding, however, Zion has been plagued by racial conflict between the Jewish minority and the African majority. Many Africans saw the Jews as a foreign ruling class, as the nation had been created explicitly for them, while many Jews saw the native Africans as the newest in a long line of persecutors. This division has continued to the present day, and politics in Zion are rigidly divided along racial lines. However, since the decline of the African Resistance Army of Christ, an anti-Semitic Christian militia group, race relations in Zion have improved somewhat.

The flag of Zion combines the 2 blue horizontal stripes and Star of David of OTL Israel, with the black, yellow, and red horizontal stripes of OTL Uganda.

Entry 5: Empire of Buriten
Empire of Buriten

The Empire of Buriten was once a colony of the Empire of Nippon. The gradual decline of the Nipponese Empire led to its colonies across the world declaring independence, and with the Nipponese military occupied by events in Choson and Chugoku it was unable to respond effectively, resulting in all of the colonies beyond the East Shina Sea leaving unopposed. In Buriten, as in many cases, the local governors or military leaders sought to unify with the more powerful of the local tributaries and vassals to produce a strong, if ethnically diverse, new state for their own protection against invasion by resentful former tributaries and vassals. The flag of Buriten combines the older Union Flag of Buriten with the Rising Sun Flag of Nippon.
The Emperor of Buriten has recently declared its equality with Nippon, in the form of a letter beginning:
"The emperor of the land where the sun sets, sends this letter to the emperor of the land where the sun rises"

Entry 6: Banner of the Slovak Federation
Banner of the Slovak Federation

The Banner of the Slovak Federation (Federacja Slowacka, Federace Slowanska) [1] derives from the royal banners of the original kingdoms of Bohemia, Poland, and Tatrania [2]. It consists of a red and white cottised triband bearing the federal arms. The Arms are an amalgamation of those borne during the Triple Kingdom period when Cornelius II Sawoisky of Poland-Tatrania inherited Bohemia:
  • Bohemia - Gules; an eagle displayed chequy Sable & Or, charged with a Silesian Crescent Argent, beaked, taloned, & crowned Or.
  • Poland - Gules; an eagle displayed Argent, armed, beaked, taloned, & crowned Or.
  • Tatrania - Argent; an eagle displayed Gules, armed, beaked, taloned, and crowned Or.
  • Savoy-Chamberie - Gules, a cross Argent, a bordure compony Sable & Or.

Cornelius I/II/II used the cottised triband most often, though did use a cottised white cross. His Palatine [3] Peter Korvinsky recorded that the cottised triband was an invention of the King, reflecting the common banners of Bohemia (red field or red & white triband) and Poland-Tatrania (red & white pentaband) alike. Cornelius as King of Poland-Tatrania previously used a pentaband bearing the simple dimidiated Arms of Poland & Tatrania.
