(This is my fist post so don/t hate it too much been thinking about it too much, if you have anything you think would help please feel free to message me. All actions in this story are fictional)

Prelude

Cheers and laughter are heard in a fancy ballroom with clocks all around the room, each show the same time a minute and a half to midnight, as the men and women in the ballroom drink and cheer one man turns to a friend of his drinking with men in military uniforms, in a southern draw the man says "How goes your office to the new year presidency?" The man turns to face the other saying in a similar accent "Adams you ole' bastard, didn't think the lord let you see the new century" Adams jokingly snaps back "Someone has to be able to ruin the new year for you" Both men share a laughter before Adams had said "What do you think the century holds for the new republic?" The other says "Haven't a clue i was hoping you'd be able to tell me" As they say this the people around them hush before all begin to say 5..4..3..2..

Chapter 1 "Empresario empire"

In the hot sun of October 1835 Mexican and Texan blood had been spilled in Gonzolas over a cannon and with it war had begun, in the swamp of Washington en los Brazos a province in rebellion had been declared and on its wooden porch Austin had called for riders to ride to every corner of northern Mexico to get volunteers. He called upon American coming to Texas for opportunities, upon the vaqueros whose blood traced back to the Spanish missionaries, upon the immigrants of Germany and the Dutch and especially upon the natives of the Commanche. He had said and wrote saying "As Texans we must all come together to stand to help fix our mother country of Mexico, Although some of us may wish we were our own republic we may not at once declare ourselves as we are but few and many wish to remain in Mexico", with this riders dispatched from Waco to Amarillo, Galveston to Van horn, Aberline to Monterey. With this many communities would prepare although not openly declare support until the deathly siege of the Alamo. In February of the following year a siege had begun in San Antonio de Bexar in it all the Texans would be slaughtered in a catholic missionary after given no quarter and with this Stephan F. Austin would be given his opportunity to declare a republic. He again dispatched riders delivering message of the slaughter at the Alamo to the people of Texas, in the meantime the Austin had made Houston the General of the army and given him these commands, "To at once halt, harass, and surround the Mexican forces coming from the south" Houston would begin his job under strength and begin to do his job to stop the then general Santa Anna while on the offensive he had began to loose many men and had received no reinforcements while fighting in 1836 he had become encircled in the swamps around lynchburg while surrounded he had began to loose hope with his own lieutenants saying "The Volunteers of Texas, although scrappy and tenacious, were at time less effective as they sat in malaria ridden swamp and with little powder and what little was there had been wetted" While surrounded Santa Anna was focused on the surrounded army he had forgotten the territories around him. With this his defeat was sealed and his army had become encircled itself by the newest of volunteers, the crushing blow to Santa Anna was shared by the 3rd Amarillo Infantry, 1st Laredo scouts, and Fredrickburgs grenadiers, itself represented the true people of the republic and with the defeat of Santa Anna the treaty of Lynchburg was signed seceding the land of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas and Texas following the Nueces river. These lands would become "The republics of Texas y Rio Grande", finally the lands in uprising were free but what would happen next.

Chapter 2 "The age of Austin"

After the end of the revolution Stephan F. Austin would declare West Columbia the nations capital and two states the state of Texas with its capital in Galveston and the state of the Rio Grande with its capital in Laredo. the constitution had allowed for a president to serve for 3 years and hold no consecutive term and almost unanimously the "Father of Texas" Austin would begin his presidency his office would focus on making Texas infrastructure he would begin by encouraging farmers to plant Corns and grains and allow ranchers to expand, this was an attempt to give Texas the ability to become self sufficient, at first the planting of cotton was allowed but not encourage but was eventually outlawed as it used too much water leading to a split between the congress of Texas, Those who saw Austin as doing too much and those who saw him as doing what he could. Eventually the Texas plains would either be farmland and the Rio Grande saw ranches the size of Rhode island, these foods would be sold to the United States and Mexico and the Buffalo of Texas began to be seen as a delicate treat in Europe. As well Austin would help fostered animosity between the people of Texas and in his second year of presidency he and congress passed an act stating "All men born free or made free in the territories of the Republics of Texas shall be citizens no matter the color, creed or background of the man" this would cause a major fracture among the political parties as many feared this would lead to an outlaw of slavery although Austin had said he was not going to free any people. This would lead to the "Cotton party" and "Bonnie Blue" parties; the first being for the legality of slavery and restricting the actions of the government while the latter being formed to ensure the continuation of plans of Stephan F. Austin. In Austin's 3 years he had made Texas self sufficient and a growing economy yet set up the congress as pyre of wood.

Chapter 3 "The Texas-Mojave plot"

After Austin's presidency his Vice president Mirabeau Lamar had ran under the Bonnie blue party while his opponent Sam Houston ran under the Cotton party although he appealed to the central leaning voters and alienated radicals. With this Lamar won and would try and keep Austin's laws, although there was fear he would be a pawn of Austin those fears were dashed after Austin died of a Flu in his home. Lamar would then begin his presidency by trying to encourage the arts of Texas and make it unique, he had made the Texas republics flag the red white and blue flag with its single star for unity among the states. While in his presidency he also encouraged artist to paint about the founding fathers of Texas in an almost biblical light and hanged many in the capital of West Columbia. As well many letters exchanged between Lamar and politicians of the united states speaking about the ideas of resuming cotton production and entering a deal with the united states for exchange. With this he knew the united states was interested in Texas and wanted it for its black land, Lamar would begin to bolster the Texan army, he would expand the Calvary and would start to build fortifications on the border before he was approached by the governor of the Rio Grande with the idea of making Texas seem less appealing, Lamar agreed and slowly the export to the united states slowed and falsified news made its way to the united states of Native attacks, disease and most interesting of all every letter to the senators of the united states were marked with a stamp of a inhospitable desert. all of these actions became known as the Texas Mojave plot. These actions would lead to a disinterest in Texas and Lamar focused on internal factors beginning to work on roads and civil services of the states of Rio Grande and Texas. While internal the republic began to strengthen it also encouraged immigrants from Europe as a way to become allies with the Europeans for ally's, the main ally would be the German and British because of the immigration and business ventures.

Chapter 4 "The Golden age of Texas"

After Lamar's presidency a golden era began in Texas and for the next 7 terms until 1863 with the presidency of Francis Lubbock, a Dr from Lubbock county although economically sound he was faced with pressure from territories around him in 1864, with the united states about to enter the civil war the party of the bonnie blue, and the party of the Cotton party debated on the floor about if they'd enter or help either side. By now the Bonnie blue had become the abolitionist party of both the Rio Grande and Northern Texas while the cotton party would become the pro slavery party prevalent in south Texas and northern parts of Rio Grande, This meant the Texas republic might also face a split over the issue of slavery even though they had become only used in the production of Tabaco as cotton had remained outlawed. In the summer of 1864 the British had given the president a telegram telling him to either outlaw slavery or they would not protect the republic. Faced with such a decision Lubbock would think about how to handle the action, on June 19th the Freemans act was made giving all people freedom from bondage, it used its basis in scripture and in the Texas Constitution with this appeal Lubbock had also tried to stop any conflict. upon hearing the news a short lived "Cotton Bur republic" in the city of Brownsville but no further rebellion was made. With this in 1865 upon outbreak of the civil war in the united states Texas did not join nor support any side, instead it would focus on keeping the peace in its territory.

Chapter 5 "the true Republic"

While the American civil war continued the Texan republic focused on the ideas of universal suffrage, and reform. While these ideas began to debate news from the north came of storms of sand a dirt, these storm's engulfed towns and ranches enough and left enough dirt to swallow entire homes, as well a third party "Rio Grande First Party" came to popularity after the Rio Grande had seemingly been a second state to Texas that although radical was growing popular everyday. These problems presented themselves around the 1875 election with the three parties there was no clear winner leading to the Texas congress that was overwelmingly Bonnie blue deciding the winner as their own party. This led to protest on all sides of the republic and many were led by the "Populist party" led by Andrew Jackson Houston the son of Sam Houston. The party appealed to the Former Cotton party and Rio Grande First party through its promise of "total Democracy" this led to a increase in numbers to the party. This meant in the 1878 the election came down to the incumbent Richard Hubbard of the mainstream Bonnie blue party and Andrew Houston of the Populist party although close there was a shift to the populist party and Andrew began his campaign to repair the nation, he would begin by subsidizing Ranchers and farms as well as start public services like the free school and textbook program to increase the parties popularity leading to the parties complete control of the congress in its next election with this Andrew had also start to act more and more one party. He would start programs at the behest of congress to better the republic. All of this saw his VP's election in the 1881 election until the president mysteriously vanished after going for a swim in the Gulf of Mexico and not returning leaving Andrew as president again, this led to even more aid to the Texan people and his popularity. He would also focus on Texas image by other countries as he began to make texas seem like a friendly settled country with a mixture of Anglo-German-American-Mexican influence. By the end of his second term he would pass an act removing the limit on non consecutive terms to let him run again the next year.

Chapter 6 "Only the best for Texans"

In 1884 on his third term Andrew Houston had coined his phrase "Only the best for Texans" and it became the motto of his local supporters, many of these supporters organized into local clubs around the republic, this showed just how much he was liked and while the people liked him he also began to act more and more without congress. Andrew would pass reform after reform at the behest of what few other members of other party's remained, he wouldn't care about what other parties there were while he was in control, Until he had learned many of the smaller local politicians had began to ban together to not enforce his laws and programs. With this Andrew enforced the "Saber decree" this pushed other parties out of congress and state legislation. This began his pledge of doing "Only the best for Texans" alone he would use his populism to help the poorest among them by starting his share the wealth program. This would help his popularity but made many enemies with the powerful of Texas and in his popularity he would start his campaign to be president for life. He would become president only after putting the Texan Army on patrol in West Columbia.

Chapter 7 "Aging Republic"

After becoming president for life Houston began many programs to help the people of Texas, This would lead to a stable and richer then ever republic. Under the president he also stopped other party or dissenters from joining politics. This led to stability if only for a while, Until a dehabilating stroke in 1894 which left him barely able to know where he was although he was able to sign bills made by his party that slowly began to focus less on the economy leaving the nation more and more poor. To replace him an aging Senator from Monterey John Zavala, while this happened he became Acting president and began to rub palms and make friends with the Texan army. This led Zavala trying to keep the peace the keystone of this was his yearly galas the most elegant of all was the New year's galas. While at this Galas the Zavala spoke to his Generals about plans to continue the republic. While the man spoke he was interrupted by the Ambassador from the united states a Mr. Adams, They began to speak as the clock continued towards midnight, All while his generals spoke about how best to ensure power remained with Zavala. Across the room one man the second cousin of Stephan F. Austin and the other the owner of Largest ranch in Texas spoke about what'd happen if Zavala and the populist party disappeared. All before the clock struck midnight.

Thus is interesting
Thanks my idea was to mix the idea of Texas Republicanism, Southern populism and teh effects of Texas and northern Mexico being independent while also having a strong American nation. A lot of it I took influence from real life, such as names being taken from real Govenors of Texas, the government of Texas being split between the northern Texas republic and southern/western Rio Grande republic. I think it’s interesting although could be improved, looking back on it I think I should have focused on a single character in this world and a bit more on the failure of Andrew Houston as a populist but I didn’t cause they might have been seen as too political.

An interesting start. I'll be honest, I don't particularly know much about Austin, so I don't know much about his views on slavery. Also, welcome to the site!
