And this is the second one. It should be noted that FACTS Magazine is not an... unbiased source. It's very certainly a loyal monarchist publication of Virginia (it's endorsed every President king candidate of the Washington family, and King George IV, if reluctantly[1]), and is very interested in making the IWC look as bad as possible. So, it's not as bad as it appears, and the other side isn't as good as it appears, obviously.

The main thing this map doesn't show that well is the sheer diversity of the IWC. I tried to make it like every possible Authoritarian-Socialist permutation I could think of, from the permanent Gulag of Patagonia, to the English surveillance state, and then to the collapsing Phillipines. So certain areas are much nicer to live in then others. For instance France is actually a rather nice place all things considered, as long as you don't anger the Surete Political. It's not corrupt, has excellent Educational opportunities (particularly in theoretical physics, biology and chemistry, although they tend to lag behind in Mathematics and applied sciences), and is very intellectual. If you anger the Surete Political however... no one talks of that. Oh, and they've absolutely destroyed the current French orthography replacing it with something that horrifies all OTL French, and is rather terrifically ugly.

The Marathas are not as nice, but India is much richer then in OTL, and WR Maratha along with Mysore are the largest power block after France. Together France and it's allies in the WNC fight the long game with Maratha and Mysore for political influence, although both groups are becoming increasingly annoyed with the absolute failure of the rest of the WRs to get it together. Since the WNC is also a fairly weak body, it only manages to apear as powerful as it is to toher powers due to it's opacity and the members fear that if they don't present a united front, Russia, China (and if they could ever agree) the USA would rip them up.

On the bad side of the WNC, you find places like Pegu (imagine the Khmer Rouge left absolutely alone for 30 years, and yoou'll be close), the slavery system of the Congo, the racist caste society of Amazonas, England (imagine 1984+Prisoner and every other British dystopia of that type, and you'll only be a little over the top of ATL England), the almost entirely collapse Phillipines (Manila and bits of Luzon are basically the only area actually controlled by the government) with rampant brigandry and violence, along with more typicall corrupt one party systems like Mejico and Guinea.

the WNC last fought a war ten years ago when Russia and China finally allied together and tried to break through the Himalayas with the help of Bengal. It didn't work out so well for them. Since then all of the world powers have retreated and the world lies in a semi-peace, although recent signs along the Red Curtain of Eastern Europe worry the populace of the world. This time, with an interventionist President king the USA looks set to join, surely on the side of the Capitalist powers. And deep within Paris as the thousands of delegates squabble and shout, cooler minds worry about the fate of the Revolution.

[1]The American political system in ATL is... complicated to say the least, but I'll try to simplify as quickly as possible. Due to the Frontier war of the 1810s, Virginia, Delaware, Mackinack and formerly Maryland and Michigan were in Personal union under the Washington Dynasty. The Washington Dynasty was also a perennial runner in the presidential elections (blame a slightly different George Washington I) as the conservative candidate, and when they're both King and President, they are usually reffered to as President-King in ATL. Canada, Belize, Jamaica, Quebec, and Nova Scotia are all part of the USA in ATL (the British monarchy fled to Ontario due to the French invasion in the 20s) and George IV stepped in when there was no Washington heir to run for president in the 1840s, when faced with a powerful radical opponent.

Two maps, both from the same universe. Some of you may remember the map of the super crazy Russian Empire I posted a while back. After thinking about your criticisms (particularly color choice and the Trans-Amurian region), I've changed some stuff. Here's the new version. Condominiums are amazing!

That is one well made map.

Very creative and interesting. Napoleonic Empire goes the way of the British one in "Fight and Be Right?"

Fortress of Delhi...since they are trying to come over the Himalayas, presumably the Pakistan area is not Russian. An ally? (the eastern parts of Greater Afghanistan, perhaps?)

Thank you.

Them and their allies in Spain and Portugal.

That map and the map above are in the same universe. the Punjab is part of the Sikh Empire.

So is 'FACTS NEWS' (Ok, 'FACTS Magazine', but Fox News) right about saying that it's totalitarian communism, or is it actually democratic socialism.

It's not that biased! Just not as unbiased a source as I could have used from this universe. Conservative yes, but not as ridiculously uninterested in truth as Fox.

To answer your question, it depends. The IWC is a federation of states, so it can vary quite a bit. Most are oligarchies/one party states, run by a small group of Socialist party members, a lot like Communist nations in our world. They can vary from very bad (Patagonia) to okay (France) as authoritarian nations go. Mysore is basically a limited democracy, where the only requirement is Socialist party membership, and some other states are experimenting with this as an idea. There are a couple of dictatorships in Africa and a few elsewhere, about as bad as you'd expect for when one man has near absolute power. Pegu is basically an army that marches around a country they've forced into Medieval times, and no-ones sure whose running England now (theres too many hidden groups, too many secrets for anyone to know), although most suspect it's the inertia of bureaucracy at this point. A few failed states scattered around to. So to sum up, mostly right, but far more complicated then they allow for.

Very nicely done... but I did have problems matching all those colors.

Perhaps it would have been better to put the core colors at the top and the ally colors at the bottom, or left and right... maybe sorting them by decreasing control.

This map is a result of being inspired by a separate idea I had earlier, which I won't go into.

Things began solidifying in the late 90's and by 2000 the major players had been established.

The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (communist, but also democratic) is was formed from what was left of PRA controlled territory.
It's backed by Russia and a variety of other countries.

The Republic of Afghanistan (systematic corruption, terrible leadership, but they atleast have elections) came to be as a result of the
United Nations Intervention in Afghanistan, it's technically the Internationally recognized government, but it does'nt have Universal support.
It's backed by Pakistan and the United States.

The Badakhshān Republic (stable, secular liberal democracy) declared its independence in '98 and has managed to actually get some
International recognition, much to the chagrin of Tajikistan, where a 'United Badakhshān' movements has grown popular.
It's basically neutral, though it has developed close ties with India and Japan in recent years and even China is has moved away from utter
hatred to mild dislike.

The Islamic State of Afghanistan (exactly what it sounds like) is the result of the various Islamist groups joining together.
It's basically disliked by everyone.

Nurestan and Kunar are both self-declared 'Autonomous Regions of Afghanistan (think Puntland).
They're both technically neutral, but Nurestan has good relations with Badakhshān and Kunar is supported by China.

The three 'Fronts' are areas that are a mixture of Anarchy, local rule or border territories in flux.

Actually, that sounds like it would be a better Afghanistan than the one IOTL...

A Little Background

Inspired by many Apocalyptic/Zombie maps, books and movies.
Additional Informations might follow.

2011: Zombie plague breaks out in California

2013: Great Middle Eastern War

2014: European Civil War begins

2018: Vulcanic Erruptions cause global cooling.

2019: The Continent of Mu appears. The Old ones invaded SE-Asia
2020: Joint Russian-Japanese-Korean Nuclear Strike against Mu. Invasion stopps

2028: now

Much to text heavy i fear
:D:

Zombies are mutations caused by a new virus. They shut-down and consume, if necassary, non vital parts of their body. This gives them superior strength and enables them to survive even multiple organ failure. The downside is, that they look "rotten", they have to eat much flesh (unable to produce proteines themselfs) and only the basic (mostly reptilian) parts of the brain do still work.
Zombies are instinct driven (eat everything, that smells not like a Zombie) but some have retained parts of their memories and the brightest of them have the IQ of a 12 year old.
The societies the Zombies formed are primitive and ganglike. They only notable exception are the Ma-go'g of China. Outside this states Zombies roam the land like predator animals. They tend to avoid very cold, arid, jungle and mountainous areas.
There are currently around 1.4 million zombies worldwide (compared to 1.6 million normal humans).
Their number will most likely decrase further (peak was 2.3 mil) due to extermination campaigns, widespread infertility an lack of food (larger mamals extinct in many zombie areas).

Some countries did suffer more from the plague than others. Being an ileland, efficient military and health care, rigid border controlls and just being lucky helped a lot. Such lucky nations inclued Israel, Cuba, Japan, Russia (nuked zombie hotspots) and North Korea.
The USA had a disadvantage because it was the first country to face the plague. Other nations knew at least what meassures did not work.
In China local authorities spend to much time covering up the plague instead of combating it.
Canada and SE-Asia were simple overrun by Zombie hordes form neighbouring countries.

The Old Ones or Octopodes appeared when Mu emerged. They quickly overrun several countries, heading for mainland Asia.
When conventional fores proved unable to stop them Russia/The Pacific Alliance launched an nuclear strike. This did the job and stopped their advance. Now (~10 years later) some Indonesian ilelands are still radioactive wastelands but the Old Ones seem to have recovered.
Their nature, language and intentions are still a mystery. (The "Old Man from the Desert" ruling Arabia seems to have some insider informations, but nobody realy trusts him). Also unknown is why they have not yet attacked again.
Theories include:
-There is a "civil war" with the Shoggothes in southern Mu.
-Their leaders do still sleep.
-They expect the, slowly expanding, madning "dream field" to enslave humanity in the long run.

The effects of the apperance of Mu and the global cooling on sea levels do mysteriously check out.

Some Nazi-scientists escaped to secret bases in Antarctica in the 40s. They spend the next 70 years performing unspeakble experiments and turning themselfs into cyborgs (Übermenschen). Due to their bioweapons a balance of terror with the Allies was achieved (Antarctic reasarch is an hoax created by the UN to conceal their existence ;)). When the US colapsed they invaded South America.

Russia: The last clearly human superpower and the "Defender of Humanity" (power-hungry imperialists as well but we don't really have an alternative). Several eastern european nations, although formaly independent have elected Putin (still around) president as well ("free and fair" elections of course). Along the borders of the more troublesome neighbours cossacks (their ranks boosted by refugees, pardoned criminals, adventureous youths, ...) provide an bufffer zone.

Tamerlan the Immortal: Nobody knows much about him: he is back to life, a military genius, has a big ego, and still wants to conquer the world!

Tibet: Seems those friendly smileing Lamas have only been figureheads for some pretty unholy creatures.

Arabia: The "Old Man of the Desert" is a scholar who visited the forbiden Iren, city of the pillars, and is now spreading strange and frightening new teachings. His diciples form one of the strongest armies in the world but he is still terribly afraid of something undescribeable.

The Empire of Kabul: Compared to his neighbours Kalif Osama I is quiet a "Mr. Nice Guy", celebrated troughout and beyond the (remaining) muslim world.

Egypt: Nylarotehep "the new Pharao" was celebrated by many arab and european intellectuals for his innovative leadership.
He almost succeded defeating Isreal, but on the brink of victory he was slain by something, that eye-witnesses described as "four wings covered with eyes, firey wheels under his feet, four faces and one of it looked like an human with firey eyes".
After his death Egypt collapsed and was occupied by Israel an Lybia (Gadafi allied with Israel, because he was pissed off being only the second craziest ruler in the area). Israel is currently trying to get its muslim population to relocate there.

Europe: Most EU nations were able to overcome the zombie plague within a year (notable exceptions: Italy, Greece, GB).
Afterwards the EU pushed forward to take over the american superpower role.
An modernisation programm was implemented that involved the abolition of the old national goverments (blamed for failures in combating the plague), economic liberalisation and eradication of "dangerous superstitions".
While supported by most major parties and mass medias it meet resistance from nationalists, trade-unions and the catholic church (revitalized by recent disasters). After several prominent politicans on both sides were assasinated an failed conservative military coup occured. It escalated into an multipolar civil war.

Three major powers (and a few smaller nations) emerged when the Oslo Treaty ended the war:

-Greater Romania (aka "The New Roman Empire", zoom in on Byzantium): Its rulling elite has contracted an mutated form of the zombie virus, that enhanced their mental an physical abillities but caused several allergies (sunlight, garlic). They also require regular blood transfusions. This is, of course, the offical version. :rolleyes:Conspiration theories point to the dubious birth certificates of General Teps and other leading politicans.
While the regime is generally very conservative (widespread capital punishment, privileges for the nobility, ...) it is also an enlightened atheist one (private worship is legal, but religious symbols are not to be displayed in public).
The huge amount of blood needed by the growing nobility is provided by slaves (slavery is a good old roman tradition).
Nightly cross border raids have brought Rumania to the brink of war with its negbours.

-The United European Republic: Technocratic, liberal, fully centralized state. Thinks, that we need a better understanding of "the mortally challenged", "earthlings of cosmic ancestery" and "alternative religious livestiles" (this tolerance does not include conservative christians and moslems - hey, they are dangerous) as well as an diplomatic soultions to the palestine, central asian and pacific conflicts.
Still a comperatively nice place to be (if you avoid the occasional witchhunts (metaphore)).:D

-The Holy League: Loose alliance of most "rebel" nations. Headed by the Pope (now residing in Toledo) and Latin is the offical language. Its "Demons are responsible for everything bad that happend so lets stop thinking about it and start kicking ass!" attitude has even attracted a few non-catholic countries that joint as "Associated Nations".
Still a comperatively nice place to be (if you avoid the occasional witchhunts (literaly)).:D

Full Members are:
Estado Espanol, Poland (the two leading members), Basque State, Portugal, Bretagne, Ireland (relations with the english have improved since zombification), the Knights of Malta (providing most of the leagues navy), Royalist France (now pretty stable and down to five coups/counter-coups a year) and the "Central European Empire" (a douzend autonomous countries, that with refugees everywhere and being to small to survive individually, decided to get themself an Habsburg Emporer and call the omnipresent chaos a strategy. It worked surprisingly well; the Empire is the worlds youngest nuclear power).

USA: After the defeat in the Battle of Chicago the US President ordered the Army to withdraw to the "New England Secure Zone". The Secure Zone was surrounded by a "Free Fire Zone" in which Zombies are eliminated by all means necassary (including A- and C-Weapons).
When the number of zomies started to decline the US began to reclaim lost territory ("Emergency Zones").
The Boston Goverment does still claim the entire US. Several City States and Warlords have accepted this claim (in return for air support against zombie hordes, medicine and high tech spare parts).

ASA: Grassroot, anti-zombie coalition. Created by local authorities, miltias and cut-of army units. All citizens above the age of 14 are required to carry a gun.
They were much to busy fighting for their survival to think of stunts like reviving the Confederacy, creating a Mormon theocracy or invading Cuba. Isolationist, weak central goverment, very conservative but somewhat torlerant. Everyone minds his own business and fights zombies.
Three Mexican border states survived because army and druglords teamed up against the zombies. They later joined the ASA. Territories do still required assistance from neighbouring states and/or the federal goverment to fight zombies.
Does not get along well with the Boston Goverment that it assues of "having abadoned the country in its darkest hour" and Louisianas Voodou priests.

The Carribean: Communist Cuba and the Voodou-Cultists battle for dominance. There has recently been a schism between Louisiana and Hait, when Louisianas grand-witch began to worship new cosmic entities.

Hm, I tried to do the opposite in the map, from the least control to the most. But yeah, it could be better organized.

A couple of ideas I had a few days ago.

George Monck became the successor of Oliver Cromwell and instead of reinstalling the monarchy he made reforms that lead to the survival of the Commonwealth. Meanwhile the Spanish colonies are reformed into kingdoms while Germany is united by Hannover. The Qing have overthrown the Ming Dynasty but they failed to consolidate their control while the Marathas manage to resist European colonialism and drove the Europeans out of the subcontinent.

An unlikely successor.PNG

This strikes me as a situation where 'to hell with territorial integrity, Badakhshan is the kind of state we want' is the attitutde I'd take if I was in power.

Oder-Neise line with a POD in the 1650s!?! How the hell did that happen? It's only been a border since 1945!

Nice! Mega-Siam, and Austria-Hungary-Italy (think I had that in a map once): but why has the Qing failure to consolidate control in China caused them to lose their homeland in Manchuria? Also, Brazil - I'm a bit dubious about that all-jungle Brazil, and what's the state of Columbia?

Bruce

(What's the year, BTW?)

It may look similar to Oder-Neise but it's not. It's mainly based off the Oder and Elbe rivers.

OK. So why that border. It still dosn't correspond to the borders of:

The Holy Roman Empire
Brandenburg+Pommerania+Saxony
Prussia
Silesia
Posen
Poland-any version
Empire of Germany
Any other German state, province or subdivision in the area before 1945

It just seems incredibly random for Germany to have that border in what looks like the equivelent of a pre-ww1 setting.
