Kingdom of Korea an American protectorate.

I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who is from Korea and we got to talking about the American expedition to Korea in the late 19th century and I got the idea into my head that with a post American Civil War POD how can you get the Kingdom of Korea to fall under American influence and protection? Heck maybe go as far as having an American naval stations in Korea and almost complete domination of Korean markets with American goods.

Also on a seperate note French controlled Taiwan and/or Hainan as well as British controlled Ryukyu Islands three ideas I've been toying with and I wonder how they would be achieved.

To do this, you would have to keep Japan away from the area.

Thing is that with a non-resurgent Japan around, Japan itself becomes a more Popular target (which is what prompted the restoration in OTL in the first place)
