Point of Divergence ... In 1989, "the Little Mermaid" was released in theaters by the Walt Disney Company. Considered to be the film that jump started the Disney Renaissance, many people were unsure of its success. Even Jeffrey Katzenberg did not think the film would make as much money as its previous film, "Oliver and Company", due to the fact that the film was more marketed for little girls. But the success of "The Little Mermaid" proved Katzenberg wrong, and one of the key features of its success was its musical score, which was worked on by Howard Ashman. Due to his success on "The Little Mermaid." he would go on to work on the films "Beauty and The Beast" and "Aladdin" before succumbing to HIV complications in 1991. His legacy though lives on through his music in these films.
What if Howard Ashman had died before coming to work for Disney? Would the films be as memorable, or would there have been someone else to make the films' scores what they were?
