Discussion: How can the carnation revolution succeed even more and what are the effects?

This is NOT saying that the carnation revolution was a failure, but imagine if it went a bit further, aka no chaos after the revolution, maybe a earlier centralization of democracy instead of it being in 1975? There also comes the factor of colonies, if this Portugal had a bit of time to actually think about the colonies, maybe they could keep East Timor since it left in 1975? Indonesia would never invade a NATO member without a good reason, and that good reason of Portugal leaving wouldn't exist. The prompt maybe too confusing so I'll restate, how can Portugal succeed even more after the Carnation Revolution in terms of decolonization, government, etc.
