At least two alternate histories in two timelines. One family has the genetic ability to walk between the timelines. The POV character was found next to her murdered mother and adopted on our timeline. She is given the locket that let's her move between the lines when her adoptive mother is cleaning house, is detected by her genetic family after doing so, and informed that she is a rich heiress and next in line to the 'throne'.
Since she is an investigative reporter for a venture capital magazine, this does not fit in with her plans. She starts working on underraising a government in a semifeudal world where rape of a major unmarried female stockholder is a viable financial strategy for taking over a corporation.
