Before we begin, I'm going to use the actual dates that the games I'm examining were started in this project, even though most of the stoppages were for inclement weather. This way, we don't have the World Series going into November too often, particularly in the era before airplanes where travel was much more difficult than it is now,

With that out of the way, it's July 21, 2016, and the White Sox are hosting the Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field. As we resume play in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers are leading 2-1.

The Tigers scored twice in the top of the eighth. With one out, designated hitter Victor Martinez beat out a bouncer to first for an infield single. Third baseman Nick Castellanos flew to shallow center for the second out, but left fielder Justin Upton lined a two-run homer into the right field seats to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead. It was Upton's thirty-second home run of the year.

Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his forty-fifth save of the year. This means that Shane Greene's save has been disallowed. He now has one for the year.

Now let's discuss the second American League wild card for 2015.

At the present time, the Indians lead the Orioles by a game and a half. Each team has a game to complete. If the Orioles win and the Indians lose, the Indians will need to play and win a makeup game to force a tie.

We begin on April 20 at Fenway Park, where the Orioles are taking on the Red Sox. As we resume play in the bottom of the seventh, the Red Sox are leading 7-1,

The Bosox buried the O's with an eight-run seventh. Right fielder Shane Victorino led off with a double into the right field corner, Third baseman Brock Holt's single to left brought him home to make it 8-1. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts' double into the left center power alley scored Holt to make it 9-1. Catcher Ryan Hanigan walked to put two men on, but he was forced by center fielder Mookie Betts for out number one, with Bogaerts moving to third. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia forced Hanigan as Bogaerts crossed the plate to make it 10-1.

Designated hitter David Ortiz singled to right to put two men on, and a wild pitch moved the runners up, Left fielder Allen Craig walked to load the bases,. and first baseman Mike Napoli walked on five pitches to force in Pedroia with the eleventh Boston run. Victorino got his second hit of the inning with a base hit to left center that scored Ortiz and Craig to make it 13-1. A walk to Holt reloaded the bases, and Bogaerts drove in his second and third runs of the inning by stroking a base hit to left center that scored Napoli and Victorino. Final score: Red Sox 15, Orioles 1.

The Indians have thus clinched the second American League wild card for 2015.

Next: To be determined.

Now let's look at the American League East race in 2012. At the moment, the Yankees and the Rays are tied for the lead. In order to maintain the tie, the Yankees need to win their home game with the Blue Jays on July 18. As we resume play in the bottom of the seventh, they have a 6-0 lead.

The Blue Jays broke up the Yankees' shutout bid with a run in the top of the eighth. Shortstop Yuniel Escobar lined a one-out single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Center fielder Colby Rasmus took a called third strike from Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda for out number two, but first baseman Edwin Encarnacion walked to put two men on, Designated hitter Adam Lind lined a single up the middle to score Escobar with the Jays' first run,

The Yanks got that run back in the bottom of the eighth when catcher Russell Martin hit a home run over the wall in left, his twenty-second of the year.

Final score: Yankees 7, Blue Jays 1.

Now let's discuss the American League Central race in 2012.

The White Sox currently lead the Tigers by a game. Each team has a game to finish. We'll begin with the Tigers' July 31 game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. As we resume the action in the top of the sixth, the Tigers are trailing 4-1 but have the bases loaded with one out. If they win, we have a tie atop the division. If they lose, they'll need the White Sox to lose in order to force a tie and a one-game playoff. Pinch hitter Ryan Raburn is at third, catcher Alex Avila is at second, and shortstop Jhonny Peralta is at first, with second baseman Omar Infante coming to the plate against Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales.

The Tigers couldn't score in the top of the sixth, as both Infante and center fielder Austin Jackson flew to left.

In the top of the seventh, left fielder Quentin Berry lined a leadoff single to left center, then stole second, Walks to third baseman Miguel Cabrera and first baseman Prince Fielder loaded the bases. Designated hitter Delmon Young flew to shallow left for the first out, and Raburn flew to shallow right center for the second out. That brought up Avila, who doubled off the wall in left center to score Berry and Cabrera and cut the Boston lead to 4-2. Fielder moved to third, Peralta followed with a multi-bouncer to short that the Bosox' Pedro Ciriaco couldn't handle. Fielder scored, Avila moved to third, and the Sox' lead was down to 4-3.

Sox manager Bobby Valentine called on Rich Hill to face Infante, who hit the first pitch he saw to short. Ciriaco fielded this one, but his throw to first was late, and Avila scored to tie the game while Peralta moved to second. Jackson followed with yet another multi-bouncer, this one to third. The Sox' Will Middlebrooks ran right past the ball for an error that loaded the bases again, but he was able to handle Berry's hot liner to end the inning.

The Sox stranded Pedroia after a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, They sandwiched a pair of singles and a pair of fielder's choices to put runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth, but Raburn scaled the wall to catch Pedroia's potential game-winning hit. Ciriaco singled with one out in the bottom of the fourteenth, and Crawford's two-out single put runners at the corners, but Max Scherzer came out of the Detroit pen to strike out Pedroia and end the inning.

As for the Tigers, they advanced the go-ahead run to third in the top of the ninth thanks to Peralta's book-rule double and Infante's fly ball, but Jackson went down swinging to end the inning.

I had to change sims and forgot to update the batting orders, which would be difficult to do anyway since I'd be working off of a sim, But I don't want all this work to go for nothing, so I'm going to leave it here, re-sim the same game next time and see what happens. Stay tuned!

Next: Tigers vs. Red Sox, Take 2.

Now it's time for my second try at Tigers-Red Sox from July 31. 2012.

(Note: The first try I made was wrong to begin with; there were two outs in the top of the sixth, not one,)

The Tigers got a run in the top of the seventh when Jackson hit a leadoff homer over the right field wall, his seventeenth homer of the year.

The Red Sox got that run back in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Carl Crawford led off with a single to right center. Shortstop Dustin Pedroia took a called third strike for out number one, but first baseman Adrian Gonzalez lined a base hit to right center to put runners at the corners. Right fielder Cody Ross's flyball to right center brought Crawford home to extend the Red Sox' lead to 5-2.

The Tigers scored a run in the top of the ninth. Berry tripled into the right field corner with one out. Cabrera walked to put two men on, but the runners had to hold when Fielder grounded to third for the second out. Young doubled off the wall in left to score Berry and bring the Tigers within 5-3. Raburn grounded to Pedroia at second to end the game.

Alfredo Acevedes came on to get the final out of the game and earn his twenty-sixth save of the season. This means that Franklin Morales' only save of the year has been disallowed.

DS- Morales

HR- DET: Jackson (17)

Now it's August 26, and the White Sox are hosting the Mariners at U.S . Cellular Field, As we pick up the action with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the White Sox are leading 4-3.

There was no further scoring. The Mariners put runners at first and third in the top of the ninth, but closer Addison Reed retired left fielder Trayvon Robinson on a lineout to right fielder Alex Rios to end the game and earn his thirtieth save of the season.

With the win, the White Sox have clinched the American League Central title.

Here are the standings for the 2022 MLB season, beginning in the American League;

East:

New York Yankees: 106-56 (+7)
Toronto Blue Jays: 91-71- 15 GB (-1)
Tampa Bay Rays: 87-75- 19 GB (+1)
Baltimore Orioles: 79-83- 27 GB (-4)
Boston Red Sox: 76-86- 30 GB (+2)

The Yanks improve by seven and the Jays fall off by one to turn a seven-game difference into a fifteen-game cakewalk. The Rays hold on to third with their one-game uptick, but the Birds of Baltimore drop off by four to finish under ,500. The Bosox bring up the rear and finish an unspeakable thirty games out despite their two-game improvement.

Central:

Cleveland Guardians: 88-74 (-4)
Minnesota Twins: 82-80- 6 GB (+4)
Chicago White Sox: 78-84- 10 GB (-3)
Kansas City Royals: 64-98- 24 GB (-1)
Detroit Tigers: 63-99- 25 GB (-3)

The Guardians celebrate their name change by comfortably taking the division despite a four-game slide. The Twins improve by four to take second place from the slumping White Sox, who fall off by three and lose their ,500 season, The Royals drop a game, but the Tigers shed three to slide past them and into the basement.

West:

Houston Astros: 106-56 (0)
Seattle Mariners: 89-73- 17 GB (-1)
Texas Rangers: 77-85- 29 GB (+9)
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 76-86- 30 GB (+3)
Oakland Athletics: 59-103- 47 GB (-1)

The Astros' real-life mark is good enough for another division title. The Mariners hold on to second despite dropping a game, and the pathetic Athletics slink a game further into the basement, a whopping forty-seven games behind Houston, The big news is the Rangers' nine-game spurt, which moves them into third ahead of the Angels. The Halos only improve by three, but still finish seventeen games in front of the A's.

Wild Card:

Blue Jays: 91-71
Mariners: 89-73- 2 GB
Rays: 87-75- 4 GB
Twins: 82-80- 9 GB

There's a tie for top seed between the Yankees and the Astros at 106-56. The first tiebreaker is season series, which the Astros won five games to two. Therefore, the Astros will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Seeds:

1. Astros (won season series tiebreaker over Yankees)
2. Yankees
3. Guardians
4. Blue Jays
5. Mariners
6. Rays

Both Wild Card Series ended in sweeps. The Guardians took a pair from the Rays at Progressive Field, while the Mariners ended the Jays' pennant defense by winning two straight at Rogers Centre. In the Division Series, the Astros swept the Mariners in three games, while the Yankees outlasted the Guardians in five. The Astros then defeated the Yankees in a four-game ALCS sweep to take their third pennant in four years.

Here are the National League standings for 2022:

East:

Atlanta Braves: 100-62 (-1)
New York Mets: 99-63- 1 GB (-2)
Philadelphia Phillies: 87-75- 13 GB (0)
Miami Marlins: 70-92- 30 GB (+1)
Washington Nationals: 56-106- 44 GB (+1)

The real-life tie for the division title is broken, as the Braves drop one game while the Mets slide by a pair. The Phillies stay where they are in third, while the fourth-place Marlins and fifth-place Nats each add a game.

Central:

St. Louis Cardinals: 95-67 (+2)
Milwaukee Brewers: 85-77- 10 GB (-1)
Chicago Cubs: 73-89- 22 GB (-1)
Cincinnati Reds: 64-98- 31 GB (+2)
Pittsburgh Pirates: 58-104- 37 GB (-4)

The Cards' two-game bump coupled with the Brewers' one-game dip turns the Cards' division title into a runaway. Elsewhere, the third-place Cubs drop a game, while the real-life tie for fourth between the Reds and the Bucs' is settled in favor of the Reds' courtesy of the Reds courtesy of their two-game upgrade. The Buccos' four-game falloff is the biggest in the league.

West:

Los Angeles Dodgers: 116-46 (+5)
San Diego Padres: 86-76- 30 GB (-3)
San Francisco Giants: 83-79- 33 GB (+2)
Arizona Diamondbacks: 77-85-39 GB (+3)
Colorado Rockies: 65-97- 51 GB- (-3)

The Dodgers add five games to top off one of the greatest regular season in baseball history. The Padres drop by three, while the Giants' two-game upswing puts them over .500. The D-Backs improve by three, while the Rox' three-game dip earns them membership in the Over-Fifty Club, as they finish a stupefying fifty-one games behind the Men in Blue.

Wild Cards:

Mets: 99-63
Phillies: 87-75- 12 GB
Padres: 86-76- 13 GB
Brewers: 85-77- 14 GB
Giants: 83-79- 16 GB

Seeds:

1. Dodgers
2. Braves
3. Cardinals
4. Mets
5. Phillies
6. Padres

The Wild Card Series matchups are the reverse of real life: the Padres head to Busch Stadium to take on the Cardinals, while the Phils and Mets renew acquaintances at Citi Field.

Now for our Defensive Play of the Day. There are two outs in the bottom of the sixth, and it's Darvish against Carlson. Here's Joe Buck:

"Fly ball lifted into shallow right, coming on is Soto, he better hurry, ball is dropping, MAKES THE CATCH AT HIS SHOETOPS!......Soto's not just another bat; he's equally skilled with the glove, as this catch suggests. The Cardinals leave a runner at first, and we go to the seventh in Game 1 with the Padres leading by three."

Padres 7th: Myers led off by beating out a bouncer to short for an infield single. Kim followed with a fly down the left field line that took a wicked hop and got caught in the fence for a ground-rule double. Myers had to stop at third. Soto's bloop single to right center put runners at the corners, Machado's single to left scored Profar, and the Padres led 7-1. Jordan Hicks reliever Pallante and retired Bell on a sizzling liner that was caught by Goldschmidt to retire the side, but the visitors have added three runs in five hits, a productive grounder, and a productive fly ball while leaving runners at first and second. It's stretch time in St. Louis, and the Friars lead the Redbirds 7-1.

Grisham walked on four pitches to reload the bases, but Nola's liner was gloved by Edman to retire the side. The Padres have added a pair of runs on four hits and two walks. They've also left the bases loaded, but as we head to the bottom of the ninth, they lead the Cardinals 10-1.

That was all the scoring. Our final: Padres 10, Cardinals 1, and the Padres lead the best-of-three series one game to none.

Now it's time for Game 2 of the first 2022 National League Wild Card Series from Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The date is Saturday, October 8:

Lineup Changes:

Padres- Brandon Drury replaces Wil Myers at first base and will bat sixth.

Cardinals- Lars Nootbaar moves from right field to center field. Juan Yepez gets the start in right field and will bat sixth.

Padres 1st: Jurickson Profar drew a leadoff walk. Juan Soto's fly to left was caught at the wall by Corey Dickerson for out number one. Manny Machado walked on four pitches to put two men on, and Josh Bell lined a single to right that scored Profar and gave the Padres a 1-0 lead. Machado went to third. but both runners were stranded when Jake Cronenworth's fly down the left field line was caught by Dickerson and Drury flew to Nootbaar in shallow center. The Friars have scored first thanks to a hit and two walks; now let's see how the Cardinals respond.

Padres 3rd: With one out, Machado doubled off the wall in left center. Bell walked to put two men on, which brought Cronenworth to the plate. Here's Joe Buck with the count one ball and one strike:

"I'd like to take a second and thank those of you who sent me a message welcoming me back to baseball. I never really left in the first place, and it was as simple as living in Sr. Louis and wanting to help out the company, since four crews are needed for the Wild Card Series. Once we started talking, I realized how much I liked calling baseball' big events, and before we were finished, I was agreeing to call this series on TV and the rest of postseason on radio. This year, Harold and I will follow the Dodgers as long as they're in the tournament; if they're eliminated, we'll adjust our schedule accordingly.

Now that that's out of the way, it's back to the one-one count on Jake Cronenworth. Mikolas checks the runners, and the next pitch us HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO RIGHT! BACK IS YEPEZ, AT THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, AND GONE!.....A three-run homer for Jake Cronenworth, the first of the series for either team, and the Padres lead 4-0 here in the third."

Harold Reynolds: "Cronenworth isn't the top home run hitter on this team, but he hit seventeen on the year, so he has some pop is his bat. This was a fastball that was meant to hit the outside corner, but tailed back over the middle of the plate. For a moment, it looked like Yepez would be able to make th catch at the wall, but it carried just a bit further than he thought it would."

Drury's liner was gloved by Tommy Edman at short for the second out, and Ha-Seong Kim's fly to deep right was caught on the warning track by Juan Yepez to retire the side. The Padres have extended their lead thanks to Cronenworth's three-run homer, and they lead the Cardinals 4-0 after two and a half.

Cardinals 6th; Nootbaar drew a leadoff walk against Padres starter Blake Snell. Albert Pujols' double into the right center power alley moved Nootbaar to third, and Paul Goldschmidt followed with another double to right center that scored both runners to slice the Padres' lead to 4-2. Nolan Arenado's popup was caught by Machado for out number one, but second baseman Brendan Donovan took a Snell fastball off of his elbow pad, which put two men on. Yepez took a called third strike for out number two, and Dickerson bounced to Ha-Seong Kim at short to end the threat with runners still at first and second. We've played six in Game 2, and it's San Diego 4. St, Louis 2,

Padres 9th: Trent Grisham lined a leadoff single up the middle against Cardinals reliever Andre Pallante. Austin Nole beat out a bouncer to third for an infield single to put two men on but was forced by Profar for out number one. Grisham moved to third on the play and scored on Soto's single to right to give the Friars their fifth run and move Nola to third. Machado walked to load the bases, and that was all for Pallante.

Jordan Hicks relieved and retired Bell on a shallow fly to new center fielder Dylan Carlson in left center for the second out. But Cronenworth walked on five pitches to bring Profar home and make it 6-2. Myers batted for Drury and slapped a base hit to left center that brought home Soto and Machado, and the rout was on at 8-2. Lom was next, and his fly ball fell in center field for another base hit. Cronenworth scored to make it 9-2 while Myers moved to third. Ryan Helsley came out of the St. Louis bullpen to get the final out, as Grisham's popup was caught by Arenado, But the visitors have added five runs on five hits, two walks, and a force okay, and they're only three outs away from the NLDS with a seven-run lead.

Padres reliever Adrian Morejon gave up one-out singles to Edman and Nootbaar in the bottom of the ninth, but came back to strike Pujols out swinging for the second out. He's ahead of Goldschmidt no balls and two strikes as we rejoin Joe:

"There you see Albert Pujols, and it's a shame that his final postseason experience was so forgettable. The Cardinals have been manhandled by this Padre juggernaut, and they're down to their final strike for this season, Morejon nods at the sign, checks the runners, two-strike pitch......GOT HIM SWINGING! THE PADRES ARE HEADED FOR LOS ANGELES!.........They weren't quite as explosive tonight, as they only had ten hits, but they turned those hits and five St. Louis walks into nine runs tonight, and they outscored the Cardinals 19-3 over the two-game series.

Our Player of the Game tonight is Jake Cronenworth, whose three-run homer in the third was the game-changer tonight. He drove in a total of four runs and scored twice, Wil Myers made it a rout with his two-run pinch-hit single in the ninth, and Ha-Seong Kim was two for five and drove in a run, Jurickson Profar scored twice despite being held hitless in four at-bats. and Manny Machado walked twice and scored twice. Josh Bell walked twice, scored a run, and drove in a run, On the mound, Blake Snell got the win with six strong innings, giving up two runs on just three hits while walking three and striking out eight in ninety-three pitches, The Padres' staff struck out a total of twelve, with Paul Goldschmidt fanning three times.

The only Cardinal with more than one hit was Tommy Edman, who was two for four. Goldschmidt doubled in both St. Louis runs in the sixth, Lars Nootbaar walked twice and scored a run. Miles Mikolas took the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits while walking four and striking out five in eighty-eight pitches.

That will do it from Busch Stadium, and it's truly a pleasure to be doing baseball again. Stay tuned for SportsCenter, which will bring you up to date on a big day in baseball and college football, plus preview Week 5 in the NFL. The Padres will begin their NLDS at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, and Harold, Buster, and I will be there to bring you the action on ESPN Radio. I'll be getting there by way of Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs and Raiders will clash on Monday Night Football.

Once again, our final score: the San Diego Padres 9, the St. Louis Cardinals 2, and the Padres sweep the series two games to none. We'll be back in a few moments with interviews from the Padres' clubhouse, but for now, here's SportsCenter."

Final totals: Padres 9-10-0, Cardinals 2-6-1.

L- Mikolas (0-1)

Now it's time for Game 1 of the second 2022 National League Wild Card Series from Citi Field in New York. The date is Friday, October 7:

Phillies 1st: With one out, first baseman Rhys Hoskins singled to right. That brought catcher J.T. Realmuto to the plate. He hit a one-one pitch three rows up into the left center bleachers for a two-run homer to give the Phils a 2-0 lead. Mets starter Max Scherzer recovered to strike out both designated hitter Bryce Harper and right fielder Nick Castellanos swinging to end the inning, but Realmuto's homer has given the Phils an early 2-0 lead, with Zack Wheeler ready to face the Mets.

Phillies 3rd: With two out, Realmuto doubled to right. Harper walked to put two men on, and right fielder Nick Castellanos hit a fly ball that dropped on the left field line and rolled toward the corner. The Mets' Mark Canha cut the ball off before it could get there, but both Realmuto and Harper scored, and the Phils led 4-0. Third baseman Alec Bohm took a called third strike to retire the side, but the visitors have added two more runs on two doubles and a walk while leaving Castellanos at second. We've played two and a half, and it's Phillies 4, Mets 0.

Mets 3rd: Center fielder Brandon Nimmo led off against Wheeler by lining his two-strike pitch over the right field wall for a home run that cut the Philly lead to 4-1. Shortstop Francisco Lindor was up next, and his fly ball down the right field line snaked its way over the wall for another homer to make it 4-2. After a visit from Phils pitching coach Caleb Cotham, Wheeler retired the next three hitters in order: second baseman Jeff McNeil grounded to third, first baseman Pete Alonso was called out on strikes, and designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach tapped to first. The Mets are on the board thanks to back-to-back solo homers from Nimmo and Lindor, but after three it's Philadelphia 4, New York 2.

Phillies 5th: Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber stroked a leadoff single to left center. Hoskins struck out swinging for out number one, but Realmuto took a pitch off of his knee to put two men on. Harper went down swinging for the second out. but Castellanos walked on five pitches to load the bases. Scherzer's first pitch to Bohm hir Alec in the elbow, which allowed Schwarber to score the fifth Philly run, The bases were thus still loaded for second baseman Jean Segura, who took a called third strike to end the inning. The Phils have to settle for a run on a hit, a walk, and two hit batsmen while leaving the bases loaded, but the lead the Mets 5-2 halfway through Game 1.

Mets 7th: Third baseman Eduardo Escobar led off by lining a double into the left center power alley. James McCann batted for catcher Tomas Nido and lined a base hit to left center that scored Escobar and cut the Phils' lead to 5-3. McCann was forced by Nimmo, who in turn was forced by Lindor. Phils reliever Brad Hand hit McNeil in the ankle with a pitch to put two men on, but Alonso's fly to deep left drifted toward the line, which allowed Schwarber to make the catch and end the inning. The Mets have scored a run on two hits and a hit batsman, but they've also left runners at first and second. After seven, it's Fightins 5, Metsies 3,

That was all the scoring. Our final: Phillies 5, Mets 3. and the Phillies lead the best-of-three series one game to none.

Realmuto was named Player of the game by ESPN. He was three for four with a two-run homer and scored twice. Castellanos added a two-run double in the third, and Bohm was two for three plus a walk and drove in a run. Wheeler got the win, pitching six innings and giving up two runs on six hits and striking out eight without giving up a walk. The Phils' pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts; Mets right fielder Starling Marte struck out four times.

For the Mets, Nimmo was two for five with a solo home run, and Lindor was two for four with a solo home run. Escobar was two for four and scored a run, Scherzer took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in seven innings while walking two and striking out twelve. Reliever Adam Ottavino added a strikeout of his own for a total og thirteen. Harper struck out three times.

Final totals: Phillies 5-8-0, Mets 3-9-0.

W- Wheeler (1-0)
S-Eflin (1)
L- Scherzer (0-1)

HR- PHI: Realmuto (1)

The series will continue with Game 2 tomorrow night here at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 7:30 PM Eastern, with Aaron Nola starting for the Phillies and Carlos Carrasco going to the hill for the Mets.

Next: We look at Game 2.

Now it's time for Game 2 of the second 2022 National League Wild Card Series from Citi Field in New York. The date is Saturday, October 8:

Lineup Changes:

Phillies
- Brandon Marsh gets the start in center and will bat seventh. Jean Segura moves down to eighth and shortstop Bryson Stott moves down to ninth.

Mets- Starling Marte moves up to second, while Francisco Lindor moves down to third. Mark Canha moves up to fifth, while Jeff McNeil moved down to sixth. Eduardo Escober moves down to seventh, Finally, Darin Ruf will serve as the designated hitter and bat eighth.

Mets 3rd: After two out. Francisco Lindor singled to right center. A passed ball charged to Phillies catcher J,T, Realmuto moved him to second and brought Pete Alonso to the plate. Here's Sean McDonough with the count no balls and a strike:

"The Padres and Cardinals will be getting started over on ESPN2 in a matter of moments. We've had two sweeps in the American League, as the Mariners have ended Toronto's pennant defense with a tremendous comeback win and the Guardians beat the Rays in fifteen innings at Progressive Field. The Mariners will get together with the Astros in the ALDS, and one of the great postseason rivalries of the Wild Card era will be renewed when the Yankees and the Guardians hook up. Alonso ready again, and the one-strike pitch IS HIT DEEP TO LEFT! BACK IS SCHWARBER, AT THE WALL AND GONE!.......Pete Alonso gives the Mets the first lead of Game 2 as he goes deep for what they hope will be the first of many times this postseason."

Frank Thomas: "Nola got the pitch a bit too far up in the zone, and Alonso's too good of a hitter not to take advantage of it. Someone a bit more athletic than Schwarber may have been able to make it a closer play by climbing the wall, but he wouldn't have made the catch."

Left fielder Mark Canha flew to Brandon Marsh in shallow left center to end the inning, but Alonso's homer has given the Mets a 2-0 lead after three,

Phillies 6th: Kyle Schwarber led off with a double into the left center power alley. Rhys Hoskins walked to put two men on, but was forced by J,T, Realmuto for out number one. Schwarber moved to third and subsequently scored the Phils' first run on Bryce Harper's lined single to right. Realmuto moved to third. The runners held when Nick Castellanos took a called third strike, Alec Bohm was next, and he hit a two-hopper to short. The normally sure-handed Lindor couldn't come up with the ball, and Bohm was safe at first while Realmuto dashed home to tie the game at two.

Mets manager Buck Showalter excused starter Carlos Carrasco and called on Jacob deGrom to face Marsh. but the strategy backfired as Marsh lined the first pitch he saw into right field for a base hit. Harper scored, and the Phils led 3-2. Segura's fly to shallow left center was caught by Nimmo to end the inning, but the visitors have taken the lead with three runs on three hits, a fielder's choice, a walk, and an error while leaving runners at first and second. After five and a half, it's Phillies 3, Mets 2.

Phillies 8th: Bohm drew a two-out walk and scored when Marsh lined a double off the right field wall to extend the Phils' lead to 4-2. Segura flew to Nimmo in center to end the inning, but the Phils have added a run on a walk and a hit while leaving Marsh at second. As we go to the bottom of the eighth it's Philadelphia 4, New York 2,

Mets 8th: Marte led off with a single to right against new Phils pitcher Brad Hand. Lindor struck out swinging for out number one, which brought Alonso to the plate. Here's Sean with the count one ball and two strikes:

"Phillies infield at double-play depth, but Marte doesn't figure to be going anywhere with Alonso at the plate. He's already homered once tonight, and the fans here at Citi Field are looking for him to do it again and tie the game. Zach Eflin got the save last night, but there's no sign of him getting ready to throw, so it's all up to Brad Hand for the moment. He checks the runner, Marte not going, one-two pitch is HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO CENTER! MARSH IS BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, AND THIS GAME IS TIED!......Pete Alonso hits this one halfway back to Philadelphia for a game-tying home run, his second of the night, and this place is on fire!"

Thomas: "Hand went for the swing and miss, but he didn't get it. This ball was absolutely smashed, and Brandon Marsh takes one step back and watched this ball sail high and far into the night. Now let's see if Hand can finish the inning without any further damage. The Phillies have to get Elfin up now whether they like it or not."

But Hand was able to finish the inning without further incident; Canha flew to short in shallow right center for the second out, and McNeil's tapper to Hoskins at first retired the side, The Mets have tied the game on Alonso's second homer of the night, and we're even at four as we head to the ninth in Game 2.

The Phils got the tying run to third in the top of the ninth on a walk to Schwarber and a single by Hoskins, but Realmuto struck out and Harper flied to right. They had first and second with one out in the thirteenth, but Alonso caught Hoskins' foul pop and Realmuto was called out on strikes, although ESPN's replays showed that both strikes two and three were way outside.

The Mets got the tying run to third in the bottom of the ninth, Eduardo Escobar led off with a single, and Daniel Vogelbach (batting for Ruf) walked to put two men on, James McCann batted for catcher Tomas Nido and hit into a 4-6-3 double play, which put the winning run ninety feet away in the person of Escobar. But Nimmo's grounder to first ended the inning. They also had runners at first and second in the bottom of the eleventh, but McCann took a called third strike to end the inning,

Phillies 15th: Marsh beat out a bouncer to short for a leadoff infield single, but was forced by Segura. This brought Stott to the plate. Here's Seam with the count one ball and one strike:

'Stott's one for six; he singled with one out in the thirteenth, but was stranded at second. We're coming up on the five-and-a-half-hour mark, and this is the third game today that's gone over four hours. But nobody here at Citi Field will complain as long as the Mets win the game and force Game 3 tomorrow night. Peterson checks the runner at first, and the crowd is on its feet. One-one pitch IS BELTED DEEP TO CENTER! NIMMO'S BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, BUT THIS ONE IS GONE!....The rookie Bryson Stott has hit a two-run homer here in the fifteenth inning to give the Phillies a 6-4 lead here in the fifteenth, and you can hear a pin drop, as this place has gone silent,"

Thomas: "Stott puts everything he's got into his swing. The pitch breaks just a little bit further inside than (reliever David) Peterson wanted, and Stott's able to meet it and drive it to the deepest part of the park. It doesn't carry as far as it would in the heat of summer; it clears the wall by no more than an inch, in fact. But the Phillies don't care; they have the lead."

Schwarber kept the inning alive when his bloop fell in right center field for a double. but Peterson struck out both Hoskins and Realmuto swinging to end the inning. The Phils have taken the lead on Stott's two-run homer, and they'll call on Zach Elfin to get their last three outs. He'll face Marte, Lindor, and Alonso with a 6-4 lead to protect.

Mets 15th: Elfin struck Marte out swinging and caught Lindor looking, but Alonso beat out a bouncer to short for an infield single to extend the game. Canha followed with a double off the wall in left center to score Alonso and reduce the Phils' lead to 6-5. McNeil walked to move the tying run into scoring position, which brought up Escobar. Here's Sean with the count two balls and no strikes:

"If Eflin loses Escobar, next up is the designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach, who's been a disappointment, to say the least, in a Mets uniform. Right now it's Canha at second, McNeil at first, and they'll both be off on contact. Nobody up in the Phillies' bullpen; this is Elfin's game win or lose. The sign from Realmuto, the nod from Elfin, two-ball pitch......swings at ball three and lifts it to right, over is Castellanos, he's under it, AND MAKES THE CATCH THE PHILLIES SWEEP THE METS!......Escpbar had no business swinging at that pitch, which was about three feet in the dirt. He did, and Castellanos made the catch to end the series and send the Phils to Atlanta, where they'll face the Braves in an NLDS beginning Tuesday,

We want to get you to SportsCenter in a hurry, so we'll just say that our Player of the Game is Brandon Marsh, who was four for seven and drove in a pair of runs. A strong Honorable Mention goes to Bryson Stott, who was two for seven and gave the Phillies the lead for good with his two-run homer in the fifteenth. For the Mets, their MVP tonight was Pete Alonso, who was five for seven with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored. It's a shame for him and the Mets that a potential game for the ages ended with nothing to show for it.

Once again, our final score in fifteen innings which took five hours and fifty-one minutes: the Philadelphia Phillies 6, the New York Mets 5, and the Phillies sweep this Wild Card series two games to none. Stay tuned for SportsCenter. which will feature highlights and interviews not only from this game, but the other fifteen-inning classic from earlier today, as the Guardians swept the Rays with a 1-0 win, Not only that, we had the amazing comeback of the Mariners, who were down 8-1 and 9-5 to the defending AL champion Blue Jays and came back for a 10-9 series-ending win, If there's been a better day in baseball history in which multiple postseason games have been played, I can't think of one. We'll have all of that for you, plus highlights from a big day in college football and a preview of tomorrow's NFL action.

For Frank Thomas, Jeff Passan, and our entire ESPN crew. I'm Sean McDonough saying an exhausted good night from Citi Field. SportsCenter comes your way in exactly three minutes."

Some of the players Sean didn't mention included Phillies Schwarber, who was four for six and walked twice, and Hoskins, who was two for seven plus a walk, For the Mets, Escobar was three for seven and Marte was two for seven and scored a run, There were thirty-four combined strikeouts; the Phils struck out eighteen times, the Mets sixteen. Hoskins and Realmuto "led" the way by striking out four times each.

Final totals: Phillies 6-15-0, Mets 5-13-1.

W- Robertson (1-0)
S-Eflin (1)
L- Peterson (0-1)

HR- PHI: Stott (1)
NYM: Alonso 2 (2)

The rest of the National League playoffs happened as they did in real life: the Padres defeated the Dodgers in four games to take one NLDS, while the Phillies beat the Braves in four games to win the other. The Phillies then defeated the Padres in a five-game NLCS to claim the National League pennant,

The World Series saw the Astros battle the Phillies, and the Astros won the fourth world championship in their history and their second as a member of the American League by beating the Phils in six games.

Next: To be determined,
