Another map challenge.

Self-explanatory. Present-day. I know it's weird.

Britain never unites+ Russia expands south instead of east+ China and Japan keep up with the West and look to the seas+ something really wierd with the uniting of Germany and Italy. Still doesn't explain the straight lines through Mexico and North Africa. Maybe something different with the great migrations around the fall of the Roman Empire? Thats the earliest single POD I can think of. Those straight lines bother me...

Since Tasmanians are regarded by most as proof that New Zealanders can swim that part of the map is easy.
:p

:p
And New Zealanders have a secret desire to be swedish? And Canadians a secret desire to be Chinese and French and Swedish? And how the hell do you get a Japan that is powerful enough to conquer the Phillippines and Indonesia but weak enough to lose Korea and Hokkaido to China? Thats damn hard.

In the 800s, Byzantium falls to the Muslims. Pope and Charlemagne cackle as Greeks pour into Italy as refugees. Eastern Slavs converted to Islam. North Africa and Egypt remain Christian. Carolingian Roman Empire emerges, struggles for control over Mediterranean. Wars are fought over Egypt, holy land, borders go back and forth.

900s, plague! Egypt establishes itself as an empire in the confusion. Has sphere of influence that reaches into parts of Arabia, Ethiopia and the Sahel. Trades freely with Muslims, Christians and Indians.

1000s, Egyptian renaissance is a rebirth of Hellenistic art, science and philosophy that spreads throughout Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Africa. Maritime technology makes a quantum leap, as Egyptians establish an "express" route across open ocean to get to their trading mission in China.

1100s, Neo-Carolingian "Franconian" king hires Axumite sailor to Go West in search of a trade route to India, since Muslims control the overland route and Egyptians control eastern sea routes. Discovers the Americas and get all the Aztec and Incan precious metals. Egyptian universities and libraries attract the great minds of the world, Neo-atomists, Taoists, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Christians, etc.

1200s, OH SHIT MONGOLS. Egypt ruined. China ruined. Muslim Byzantine Caliphate ruined. Only Franconia soldiers on, the Light of the World, true inheritor of the Holy Flame of Egyptian Knowledge!

1300s-1600s, Belgae emerges as a great rival to Franconia thanks to chocolate plantations in Brazil. Loads of bloody wars are fought. Franconia remains dominant thanks to government reforms modeled after Chinese bureaucracy.

1600s, China...which has been chilling out all this time...decides to copy Egyptian technology and Franconian expansionism lest they fall behind and risk being conquered; they Go East and conquer Western North America. Shiao-Lin is their American capital--center for Chinese shipbuilding industry and site of world-famous salmon runs. Much of the Americas remain unexplored by Old Worlders. The Muslim Caliphate makes inroads in Siberia and fights a series of devastating border wars with Western Slavs and Germans.

1700s, industrial revolution takes place at mills along the Nile. Egypt rises again! Franconia resists and closes off its borders, but various Japanese rulers go for it and industrial production in Japanese States and their Indonesian possessions quickly outstrip Egypt.

1800s, the Japanese century. Japanese rule the seas! Japanese States, descended from shogunates, for a time control all Europe, India, even Egypt.

1900s, world war between Caliphate/China and Japanese States results in a decisive Caliphatical/Chinese victory. The right for European empires to self-determination is enshrined in international law. Egypt is given dominance over most of Africa. Japan maintains only its Indonesian and Philippines possessions. Hokkaido given to China as a token of humiliation. Never again will the world tolerate warring nation-states. Freedom can only be secured in Empire.

2000, Maori Empire, a rising power, conquers unorganized Nordic lands.

;)

Instead of expanding to Siberia, the Tsardom of Moscow decided to expand south. In time, they managed to take over the Ottoman Empire and expanded to the Islamic heartland. Elsewhere, the British managed to outrace the Dutch in its race for colonies in the east indies. The British colonies declared themselves independent during the decolonization era as one nation.

The tan territory around Hudson's Bay is totally ASB.

You can't get to the 'Ontario' bit of it through the St. Lawrence, because a different state controls that; and chunks of the Canadian prairies are best accessible through Hudson's Bay, so anyone does control Hudsons Bay and Lake Winnipeg should control most of (at least northern) Saskatchewan.

Maybe the Huns never migrate to Europe and instead establish a strong nomad empire in central Asia? So when the Russians and Chinese start expanding towards central Asia, they meet heavy resistance and decide it just isn't worth it. So Russia goes south and China goes west. The rest is butterflies.
