With a POD no earlier than 1600, have some German nation (or several of them) colonize the OTL 13 Colonies instead of Britain. Bonus points if the 13 Colonies are colonized by Protestant German states. You can have the English still set up colonies on the East Coast if it's necessary, but the German colonies need to absorb them somehow. Maybe the English Civil War or the Thirty Years' War would provide a good opportunity for the German Americans to take out the British colonies.
What would the society, customs, religion, demographics, and language of these colonies look like? Would we see an analogue of the United States arise except comprised of German-speaking settlers instead of English ones? Would slavery play a big part in this German America, and would there be a North-South divide like what happened in the English-speaking 13 Colonies?
