Not sure if this has been done before ... I have wondered if larger parts of the British Empire would have held together over time if it had been able to hold onto the American colonies, along with the other (mostly) Anglophone countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand).

Anyway, thought I'd have a go at this. Good luck to the contestants, who are presented as thus:

Conservative and Unionist Party (Leader, Sir Topham Hatt): The title says most of what you need to hear. Hold onto the Anglo Union. No devolution for the North American provinces, Australia or New Zealand. Limited representation at Westminster is quite sufficient, especially in these days of internet communication and jet transport (North America has 50 seats, Australia 10 and New Zealand 5 ... out of 700).

Anyway, if these provinces get it, who is to say that even Ireland or Scotland won't agitate for it? And by the way, no more expansion of the franchise.

Retain the gold standard and imperial preferences. Do not tinker with the House of Lords. We need them to counterbalance popular passions with the wisdom granted by centuries of collective experience.

As for relations with the German dominated European Union, Russian Empire and the like, well, that is what our strong navy is for.

Liberal Party (leader: Jeremy Earnest): Full representation at Westminster to the provinces per their population. Reform of the House of Lords so that they are no longer created solely by the King (Or Queen) but some will come from all parts of the Empire. Free trade instead of protectionism. Remember that we are a part of Europe as well as our own Empire.

Each province and region should also have a consultative assembly as well.

And for heaven's sake, let us at least consider extending the franchise to women. The European Union did that back in 1982 and there has been no social breakdown.

Labour Party (Leader: Harold Bloke): The primary issue is the dignity of the labouring classes across the Empire. Institute a minimum wage. Share responsibility for industrial policy between labour and bosses. National Health Service for all. Increase pensions. You know, like in the EU.

Reform electoral districts to reflect population. The provincial city of New York has one MP at Westminster despite having two million inhabitants, while Wiltshire county, with 100,000 inhabitants, has 2. Abolish the House of bleeding Lords. Let those toffs get a real job like we have to.

For North American voters only, in addition to the major parties above:
United North American Party: devolution and autonomy for North America.

For Australian voters only, in addition to the major parties above:
The Outback and Kiwi Alliance: also for devolution and autonomy for Australia and New Zealand.

Imperial Federation in the "white" British Empire was a serious proposition in the 1880s and 1890s - if Charles Dilke hadn't been caught with two other women in his bed (neither of them his wife) and become PM instead of Gladstone in 1892 and he and Joseph Chamberlain had succeeded in forming an alliance with Germany it might still exist...

fertile ground for a TL...
