  1. Could the War of 1812 have morphed into the US taking direct involvement in the Napoleonic Wars?

Not to derail, but why don't we call it enslavement? I know THEY called it impressing but why should we use their own euphemism for it? Was it legitimately different in some capacity? And could there be a way for abolitionists in the north to equate the two?
  2. Industrial Progress: A Story Of Venetian Suffrage (Haitus)

Not to be that guy... but can we have a map? To be honest this Venice doesn't sound substantially larger than IOTL so I am a little confused by the 'large colonial empire'. I understand it's mostly a difference of how they're exploiting them but I'm still having some difficulty imagining the...
  3. Julian reforms Roman Hellenism

Anything is possible. Of course it would be difficult but I think ah.com tends to be excessively determinist when it comes to certain things. The same way the Christians' faith syncretized to attract pagan followers, the new Mithras/Sun cult will have to draw from the very popular monotheist...
  4. Industrial Progress: A Story Of Venetian Suffrage (Haitus)

I really don't have much to contribute, your knowledge here far outstrips mine, but I have to say this is my favorite timeline on this site and I can't wait to see more. I've read your other threads in the past but this seems to have even greater polish. Keep it up!
  5. AMBITIONS TOO HIGH FOR A MORTAL- A Collaborative Julian TL

Not to quibble but this isn't very accurate. Enim, nam, and pro all translate to english as 'for', but only pro is ever used in the sense of 'for the sake of'. You also have a nominative/ablative gloria and an accusative Romam. If you mean to say 'for the glory of Rome' then 'Pro gloriā Romae'...
  6. Etruscan Italy

That's probably fair to say then. I would question the idea that peacefulness encourages monotheism or that Carthage was particularly peaceful.
  7. Etruscan Italy

But that hardly makes it monotheistic of any kind, much less of the Jewish variety does it? I've never before heard of the Etruscans described as monotheistic, so I'm curious where this is from. Do you have any literature? As I understand it so far, by your own standard wouldn't the Roman...
  8. Etruscan Italy

I think I catch your meaning. Are you suggesting that as a religion that incorporated revelation it was susceptible to becoming monotheistic? If that's the case then it certainly would be interesting to see the alternate religions. Though I think what made Judaism unique was the messianic...
  9. Etruscan Italy

When you say revived faith...? Is there some Etruscan revival I'm unaware of? Because the Etruscan of the era of the Etruscan leage were fairly famous for their polytheistic religion (Tin Aita Charun Calu?)
  10. Etruscan Italy

I wonder if there was any truth to the Roman description of Etruscans as thinking in a fundamentally different way from themselves. To paraphrase, "We believe that because clouds come together lightning strikes, the Etruscans believe that clouds come together because lightning will strike". By...
  11. Commune of Rome

:coldsweat: Of course I have no vested interest in the subject... But could there perhaps have been a pope who, if not accepting the total loss of power, could have accepted an autonomous city in his realm? Or if the support of Barbarossa for the Romans was ironclad, a pope who acceded to rule...
  12. Commune of Rome

To be clear, I wasn't suggesting an uber secular or neo pagan continent spanning superstate. The Commune of Rome tossed out the Pope in 1144 (with the theoretical support of the HRE) and its people were absolutely not satisfied just being the religious center of the world with a power hungry...
  13. Commune of Rome

Is there some way that the Commune of Rome of the 12th century survives? It had the support of the HRE initially, could it have continued longterm? I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject as the most I've read is the wiki page, but I would suspect not. The Catholic church had much too much...
  14. If you could change one event in history pre 1900

I love this answer. I would like basically anything that preserves more languages and cultures (as much as I love my country it has a pretty poor record), the last 1500 years have been pretty apocalyptic.
  15. Etruscan Italy

No? Where are you getting that from? They were certainly influenced by Greek culture, as were the Romans but they were their own thing. They certainly didn't speak any kind of Greek language. As for a victorious Etruria, it's pretty hard to say but Rome's meteoric rise (comparatively) to me...
  16. Favourite Obscure Civilizations?

Most bronze age mediterranean cultures especially Etruscans, about half of native american tribes, the Cham.
  17. AMBITIONS TOO HIGH FOR A MORTAL- A Collaborative Julian TL

Ah, Samarra. Perhaps that fool Jovian can be avoided, this time.
  18. Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

I am salivating at the prospect of an afro-roman state! It's such a rare thing...
  19. Linguistic Question: Why don't Romance languages have declensions?

Well the only reasonable answer I've ever had to that is the idea that when languages first formed they came up with unique declension for every single word and it was time that eventually turned them into regular classes. That explanation is unfortunately a little vague, though it sounds good...
  20. Linguistic Question: Why don't Romance languages have declensions?

The Subject Object Verb (SOV) structure is by far the most common kind around the world, so it's probably a good thing you're getting used to it. :p I can't speak to non-Romance/English languages well, but it seems like streamlining is just a natural progression. Classical Latin is extremely...
