  1. Sedentary non-agricultural civilization in Europe?

I intend to get back to it. I just encountered the awkward problem of finding information that contradicts something I already wrote that was major enough to mess up my plans and then I got distracted because I'd lost forward writing momentum.
  2. AHC Game: Create your own ATL Cuisine

Something from the ADWL verse: Name: "Belly Warmer" (literal translation of name into English) Place of Origin: Oryuna Empire and adjacent countries Ingredients: Meat, fat, pendulous sedge or black bindweed seeds (later descendents of the dish sometimes use buckwheat instead after the crop in...
  3. AHC: Pig dairy industry

I don't think anyone knows. I vaguely remember reading something years ago about some mad chef bloke going to great lengths trying to get some for mad chef reasons but I can't remember if he had any luck.
  4. AH Cuisine and Culinary Practices

Regarding what I said in my previous post about seasonings native to Europe but underutilized in OTL, here's where I got a lot of my information on the subject from: https://gallowaywildfoods.com/wild-spices-of-the-uk/ Of course some of the things listed on that site make more sense as "things...
  5. AH Cuisine and Culinary Practices

My TL " A Dog Went Left" will probably go on to involve a great deal of culinary divergence, although at the moment that side of things is just sort of implied. Very little in the way of cereals, a lot of vegetables and seasonings that are native to northern Europe but for some reason weren't...
  6. Mississippi: The Seventh Cradle of Civilization

Probably more likely a reindeer. I know that there's some ethnic group in Mongolia whose name I can't remember who herd and ride reindeer. It has to be the biggest male reindeer though since most of them are too small to take the weight of an adult.
  7. AHC Men Reign But Women Inherit

I read somewhere that an least some historians reckon that something along those lines was the case in what's now Greece and adjacent countries during the Bronze Age, mainly based on the fact that a lot of the myths we have were from back then (via centuries of oral tradition before someone...
  8. ACH: Female Knights

I remember seeing something on TV about female samurai, who were apparently surprisingly common, especially in earlier periods. Maybe some of the reasons for their existence could also be applicable to Europe, although I'm not entirely sure what said reasons were...
  9. ACH: Female Knights

That's probably the most plausible option. The Dahomey Amazons in Africa, who were around for about two hundred years, were the result of a shortage of men due to high casualties in war after all so there's OTL precedent, albeit from a very different culture. Interestingly, it sounds like they...
  10. More domesticated animals and plants

I think that hares are too solitary and too uninclined to put up with being contained. Rabbits live in warrens in large groups which is easy for humans to work with, hares live on their own above ground which is a lot harder to work with.
  11. A Dog Went Left

AFAIK the European Wildcat is notoriously bad tempered so they might be too much of a pain in the ass to work with.
  12. A Dog Went Left

Otter fishing was a thing in OTL in multiple countries although nowadays it's only still practiced in Bangladesh. The main technique used was to have the otters herd fish into the nets rather than having them catch the fish themselves, which is apparently quite effective
  13. A Dog Went Left

Apparently infertility is less of an issue for bovine hybrids than, say, equine ones. Also European Bison/Domestic Cattle hybrids exist in OTL as a recent development. I'm yet to find any info on them that isn't on Wikipedia (and doesn't cite sources) but apparently while there are some...
  14. A Dog Went Left

I know that six different bird species would be excessive, which is why I'm asking. I'm having trouble narrowing it down. Regarding bison and cows, given that IIRC they're closely related enough to be interfertile, I did contemplate having some hybridization occur due to whoever was doing the...
  15. A Dog Went Left

First off, sorry I haven't updated in a while. Secondly, I'm trying to finalise my list of domesticated animals for TTL, even if some of them won't happen for a while, and I'm concerned that I might get a little carried away and have too many so I thought I'd put it to a vote. The Maybes...
  16. More domesticated animals and plants

They tried to domesticate (European) moose fairly recently in OTL. While not a complete failure it would probably be more accurate to say that they came to an understanding with the moose. They can't be penned for prolonged periods of time and their dietary habits are another problem so the...
  17. More domesticated animals and plants

The really amazing thing is that people did it one least three very separate occasions, maybe more, given the number of different cattle subspecies out there. Which means that multiple groups of humans in very different places all independently decided to take on the temperamental things with...
  18. More domesticated animals and plants

I'm convinced that an opportunity or three was missed with the thylacine. According to accounts from people who kept wild caught ones, or had relatives who did, they were stupidly easy to tame, extremely docile and tolerant of children, and were better four-legged alarm systems than dogs because...
  19. A Dog Went Left

Still don't know how to feel about things but thank you all for your kind words. It does mean that there's more pressure now though since there's a standard to uphold.
  20. A Dog Went Left

I won? Wasn't expecting that. Didn't know until just now either. Not sure how to feel about it to be honest, I don't have much experience with regards to winning things.
