  1. Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

So, wait, is the March meant to be specifically held by the monarch? Like, a march that's held by a noble wouldn't count?
  2. Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Yeah the convoluted requirements for the history of the world put me off. It's just not inspiring, I'm afraid.
  3. Weekly Flag Challenge: New Challenges & Previous Winners

If I'm understanding this correctly, the challenge is "Make a flag derived from a coat of arms that is in someway related to a march which is not ASB or based on fiction"?

I'm glad you found Paint, though I'm confused by the issues you had saving it. I would advise you to save images as PNG files instead of jpegs, though, as PNGs maintain the image quality better.

This is the advice thread, and that is the opposite of advice. Do you know what operating system your computer's running? You said it's not Microsoft Windows 10, but is it another version of Windows? If so, then MS Paint should already be installed - it comes with all Windows operating systems.
  6. Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

Can you point to any examples of the kind of thing you're talking about?
  7. Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Yeah, it's difficult to justify actively being evil, especially without being amoral. Even the most disgusting and egregious evils, real and fictional, generally claim to be good or reject conventional morality - to hold a system of morality and deliberately violate it seems paradoxical.

I'm afraid I mostly use Paint.NET for adding some effects that aren't possible or easy in Inkscape, so I don't have any general advice for using it. If you have a specific problem or effect you're trying to achieve though I can try and figure it out for you, if you like. :)
  9. Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Alright, so no Lloegyr, but an England derived from Mercia would be acceptable. Got it. :)
  10. Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Is England defined geographically, so a Romano-Celtic Briton/"England"- for example - would qualify? Or does it have to be a state derived from the Kingdom of England of OTL?
  11. Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

I'm not sure it counts as "recent", but when I won a round a while back the original display size of my flag was 561 x 847. I think a 1:2 ratio for the limit is a good idea, since that is generally the longest flag ratio we're going to encounter, so given the original size of my entry 600 x 1200...

Ah, thanks for sorting that one out @Enmergal. :P
  13. Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

I just tried it quickly myself and it does seem like it works fine with the two shapes on different layers. So, uh, I have no idea what's going wrong. Any chance you could upload the SVG you're working on, CtrlAltHistory?
  14. Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

I never use layers myself, so I'm guessing that's interfering with it. Also note that both the nation borders and coastline should be closed shapes with no gaps, and that you can only do most Boolean Functions with 2 shapes - so if you're selecting multiple nations' borders as well as the...
  15. Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

Heh, that's actually the method I used to use. :P
  16. Map of the Fortnight: Main Discussion Thread

I used to agonise over finding good quotes and inspiration for MotF challenges. Who knew that Smash Mouth was such a gold mine? :P
  17. Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

No problem! I remember when I was starting out with Inkscape there were a bunch of inefficient methods like that I used to achieve effects that I can do now with speed and ease. :P

Challenge suggestion for the next round:
  19. Illustration Tutorials and Advice Superthread

I'm a bit tired, so it's difficult for me to figure out the exact thing you're trying to do and exactly what to do to achieve it, but I think the tools you are missing are the "paste in place" command (under the Edit menu, or Ctrl + Alt + V) and boolean functions, specifically Difference and...

"La Bandiera Bianca" Italian Republic / Repubblica Italiana "Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you and will eat your...
