I'm gonna repost two videos by Greg. One is turbo vs Supercharging, and the other is power recovery turbines. At 36 minutes is a direct comparison chart between the systems on a R2800. turbocompounding I lied, a third video on the best supercharging system on a Corsair

If you scroll down to Chapter 14, the Hispano entry, there is a really good explanation of the whole US Hispano issues here https://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/MG/I/MG-5.html

Just in case anyone wants a not-lego P-38 for Christmas https://www.amazon.com/COBI-Historical-Collection-Lockheed-Lightning/dp/B09R9SG4XL/ The F4U/AU-1 Corsair looks pretty sick also.

WW2 carbines for other countries, too?

Another cartridge to consider is the .250-3000 Savage. 6.5x48 with an 90gr bullet at 3,000fps (or 115gr at 2800fps) It's based on a shortened .30-06 case. An interesting coincidence is Savage has the patent on box magazines until 1942.

Greg references that report extensively in his first video on the P-47. He says that Republic apparently used it to refine the P-47 design as they fixed all the problems noted in the P35. That is a P-35, not a XP-41 in the report. starting at around 6:30

US Navy Battlecruisers: Possible? Reasonable? Remotely Likely?

Laid down in 42, they wouldn't have joined the fleet until 46. OTOH the same slip can turn out 2-3 essex class per hull in the same time. You aren't trading three Alaskas for two fast BBs, you trading the two fast BBs for 4+ Essex class. CB-2 and -3 jammed up a 900ft slip from 2/42 to the end...

You could probably increase the MV with a longer barrel, it was 20lb lighter as it was. The Japanese 20mm cartridge did fire a weak version of the H-S 404 cartridge, 20x94 vs 20x110, due to the weaker steel used: 29,000j instead of 47,000j. Stronger action allows a higher MV. An article here I...

There's a good article on the H-S 20mm in US service at this link. https://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/MG/I/MG-5.html Scroll down to Chapter 14, at page number 574 for the beginning of the US service discussion. (the link begins on 495 so you don't actually have to scroll 574 pages!)...

Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles channel on y/t has started a P-38 series like the videos on the P-47 he did. It may be of interest. Part 1 Part 2 His 8 part P-47 series is really in depth and y'all would probably like it.

WI: USAAF adopts F4U Corsair or F6F Hellcat for long range bomber escort missions?

Sorry for the very late bump, but this video just posted about the P-47s range and the influence of the Bomber Mafia on US fighters. It's an hour long. In short, USAAF higher command at first prevented the development of drop tanks, and then, despite a working 200gallon DT available from Jan 43...

What if the USA army focused on heavy tanks in WWII?

No, it's based on a version of the M4 hull, but it is not a Sherman with a 90mm gun. The vast majority of M36 turrets were dropped on M10 hulls anyway, there were only 187 M36B1 with the M4A3 hull. The rest used M10 and M10A1 hulls. If that's your criteria, then the M7 is a Sherman with a 105mm...

What if the USA army focused on heavy tanks in WWII?

Different length barrel, different breach block to allow the autoloader, different chamber for different sized ammo.

What if the USA army focused on heavy tanks in WWII?

There weren't any in WWII. Unless you count the M36B1 which dropped a M36 turret on a stock M4A3 hull. Post war the Israelis went from a AMX-13 high velocity 75mm gun to a French 105mm on their Shermans.

What if the USA army focused on heavy tanks in WWII?

The number available as a portion of the total is not the point I was answering. The comment was there were no 76mm Shermans available for France and that is 100% false. 2AD and 3AD entered combat in France with 76mm Shermans and others took them as combat replacements. It also doesn't matter...
