  1. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

First apologies for the seeming 'necro', but it's been a while since I indulged in the forum :) Mikestone8 - it's a good book, doens't give all the answers by any means but certaibly worth reading to put everything into perspective. And yes, the French were not doing well, but likewise the...
  2. 1812 War - British Victory

rebellions tend to be small scale and nowhere close to civil war standards.. if the 'suppression' fails then depending on the Government they just get bigger and bigger until they turn into a civil war in most cases (domestic) or revolution/independence in this instance. If the US had lost then...
  3. 1812 War - British Victory

true.. but it was a rebellion not a war in the early stages. And not a revolution until the US won :) And the US was the only real 'winner' of that whole war.
  4. 1812 War - British Victory

You do mean apart from also fighting the French, Spanish and Dutch at the time as well as a good chunk of the rest of Europe employing 'armed neutrality' against the British during the WoI?
  5. Importance of the Zimmermann Note

The British army reached a stage where they refused to use radio for significant orders etc due to the British capabilty of interception and decoding. The french developed a system whereby they could listen in electronically to the field telephones in use in the german trenches (not hard wired...
  6. Importance of the Zimmermann Note

One of the routes through which it was sent was via the US Embassy in Berlin which the US Gvernment had made available to Germany with the proviso that nothing hostile to US interests would be sent via that route. Which probably added insult to injury. The British were aware of it before it...
  7. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

There's a very good book:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Economics-World-War-I/dp/0521107253/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b which gives an detailed review of the economies of all the major powers in WW1 and Holland also (they also have a ww2 equivalent). So for example, the UK government budget deficit...
  8. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

Printing cash - the UK Treasury (and Gov't) was dead set against this policy and any policy that threatened to weaken the USD/GBP exchange rate as with the medium term need to purchase huge volumes from the US it would have been totally counter productive. Total war - the French had a worse...
  9. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

Several points:- 1)US goods could ONLY be bought in USD before, during and after the war. Which is why the fiorst loans were made.. because there was a shortage of USD outside of the US.. not because of a shortage of cash. 2)Loans were/are not the only method of obtaining USD, the US did not...
  10. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

Are you trying to tell me that in all of those books that it was the British who forced a peace upon the US and that France was too exhausted to continue anyways.. and that Wilson never threatened both of them with a seperate peace if they did not agree to open negotiations by dropping what he...
  11. Britain concedes in WWII = No Holocaust?

The OP stated that the British had bowed out (somehow), that had to be after the original French surrender, hence...
  12. Britain concedes in WWII = No Holocaust?

I doubt that the German would care too much whether the region that accepted the Jews could viably support them, nor, having forced the British to peace (or however it came about) would they be overly concerned about their finer feelings over the proximity to Palestine of that region.
  13. Britain concedes in WWII = No Holocaust?

I said 'final' peace with France - the original 'peace' leaving a rump Vichy France and a German military occupation zone would have to be redone, but that would be after the British agreed to a peace and not before.
  14. Britain concedes in WWII = No Holocaust?

Syria/Lebanon As part of the final peace treaty with France (after peace with the UK) the French Territory of Syria could be used as a destination of final emigration, the Nazi's would be happy, the Jews would be 'happy', the arabs in the area wouldn't be of course and presumably neither would...
  15. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

I have to ask, just where 'does' this come from?? It was Wilson who pulled the plug in 1918 against further military operations, not the British or the French.
  16. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

Quick points on the financial arrangements A couple of quick points on loans. 1) Britain lent more than it borrowed during WW1 - just to drive the point home; Britain was owed more than it owed to others. 2) The reason only Britain borrowed from the US and not the other entente's was that...
  17. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

Parts of this thread reminds me of Norman Stones 'Eastern Front', in which both sides are lambasted for not operating at a theoretical military best at all times and all levels, in fact he doesn't have anything positive to say about either sides conduct on that front. The practical results of...
  18. WI: Hipper stays and fights

I suspect Maniakes that you are confusing battles - the OP was about Dogger Bank and not Jutland. :p
  19. If Britain Kept its Dominions

the last set of serious attempts at creating a Federation within the British Empire failed in the early years of the 20th century. A lost election. The Uk voters had on one side, Old age pensions, and on the old a manifest that included imperial federation. They went for pensions. So you don't...
  20. Which world war did Germany have a better chance of winning?

Butting in to the two way 'brawl' somewhat I suspect that there is some confusion over the definitions in use:- tactics -> operations -> strategy -> grand strategy -> logistics -> economics. The german military operated superbly in both world wars up to the 'strategy' level, failed at the...
