  1. Roosevelt-Bryan coalition in 1912?

Those are good points, and their bases would most likely converge, but Bryan wouldn’t endorse Roosevelt for a myriad of reasons. Bryan was an ardent anti-imperialist. (I think he was even against the annexation of Hawaii, much less the territory acquired in the Spanish-American War.) Roosevelt...
  2. ACW points of divergence

I don’t think a general mostly known for being a neurotic who constantly favored all our assaults would do well at Gettysburg against George Gordon Meade. (All out assaults weren’t exactly a great idea. Just ask George Pickett and his brigade.) (God help Jackson if the battle is held at Pipe...

Quick thought, but since loyal Lee and Commanding General Johnston have been brought up, here’s an interesting scenario. Lee commands Union troops, Johnston commands Confederate troops, and the war is effectively the same, but with less casualties. What do I mean by this? Lee was a fan of the...
  4. ACW points of divergence

McDowell was forced to attack since everyone was hoping the First Battle of Bull Run would be decisive and end the war right then and there. McDowell was the first to state “Hey, we need at least one to two months to actually train the troops.” Lincoln, due to political pressure, did not heed...
  5. ACW points of divergence

Is that an actual quote? If so, kudos to whoever had the strength to say that to the President in the 19th century!
  6. ACW points of divergence

@naraht made a post about this! Smaller CSA Navy.
  7. ACW points of divergence

My bad, I meant Yorktown, but typed Norfolk. Was pretty tired. To quote your excellent post: “One possible minor ramification of no Virginia is the speeding up of the Peninsula campaign. Without the presence of the Confederate Ironclad, Yorktown is most likely taken in an amphibious envelopment...

Craig’s firing doesn’t make much sense, and I wonder why Winfield Scott backed Cameron on it. (As well as why Lincoln didn’t intercede.) Doesn’t seem Ramsay had much room to maneuver in the position, and just kept the previous policies in place for a while. Is there anything to say for...
  9. ACW points of divergence

Henry Craig was that bad? (Looked him up… yeah.) I can’t recall now but from I remember, Miegs is considered great as Quartermaster, but one of his fellow logistics officers was considered awful at his job. Do you recall the name? Any evidence that Ramsay was considered (or wanted) the job...
  10. ACW points of divergence

Any way to fix those productions issues or perhaps have the army begin refitting its soldiers before the beginning of the war? (Ideally right after SC secedes.) If not, then perhaps they start in ‘57? (Frémont presidency?) (After all, who better than a solider to understand their needs?)...
  11. ACW points of divergence

Thanks! Do you have any candidates in mind? (Bonus points if there’s sources stating they were considered for the position.) A similar PoD question I have is: What if Commodore John H. Aulick was the one who led the expeditions to Japan rather than Commodore Perry? (Pre-ACW, but Aulick lived...
  12. ACW points of divergence

Sounds interesting! Could you give more context?
  13. ACW points of divergence

Thanks! Yeah, that’s what the source meant (that it was attempted a year before the successful one was started). Still, losing Vicksburg over a year earlier must be devastating to the Confederacy. I wonder what it would look like if they had lost Charleston and Vicksburg in ‘62.
  14. AHC: With a generous butterfly net, what's the latest or least "destructive" PoD that'll lead for Japan to buy Alaska from Russia in the 19th century?

I’d say the best way for Japan to get Spanish Alaska is if they purchase it (along with the Philippines) in 1896/1897 when they each attempted to buy/sell, respectively. Right before the war, but late enough for Japan to be built up.
  15. ACW points of divergence

My apolgies, the source I used just said “a year before” and I understood it as exactly a year, I’ll correct it.
  16. ACW points of divergence

Would love to read that in particular! Do you have a full quote in detail? Is there anything to be said about a successful taking of Fredericksburg?
  17. ACW points of divergence

Main ACW PoDs I’d go with (no particular order): Ben Butler is more successful in his battles (Bermuda Hundred, etc.) Ben Butler is Lincoln’s VP nominee in 1864. George Henry Thomas accepts command of the Army of the Cumberland in August 1862, replacing Don Carlos Buell (rather than...
  18. ACW points of divergence

Could you explain #6 in greater detail? Quite curious as to what it entails.
  19. AHC: With a generous butterfly net, what's the latest or least "destructive" PoD that'll lead for Japan to buy Alaska from Russia in the 19th century?

I’d say: maybe give Japan earlier successes in its conquests. Have Japan conquer Korea during the first invasion, and have Hideyoshi/Nobunaga unite the country, building it up into an industrial powerhouse. With an population boom, they’ll settle Korea, but once that space is filled, they’ll...
  20. AHC: With a generous butterfly net, what's the latest or least "destructive" PoD that'll lead for Japan to buy Alaska from Russia in the 19th century?

Current population’s just below 735K, so a couple million would actually be quite impressive.
