Movie POD's

They screentested James Caan for the role of Michael and he probably could have made it work (though then we’d lose his magnetic explosive turn as Sonny). Just can’t picture Redford pulling off the restaurant scene or in Part II the “it was an abortion” slow burn build

There probably wouldn't even be a part 2 in this ATL

The shark in ‘Jaws’ work which means Spielberg shows the shark earlier and more often.
What made the movie great was how the shark wasn’t shown until the audience was already terrified and the use of music, reaction shots, and the barrels to represent the shark heightened the suspension.
The delays in shooting allowed the cast to improvise and that was used in rewrites and the story about Quint and the USS Indianapolis made him more than a one note character.
The film would have made about $30-40 Millions which was very good but it is nowhere near the business it actually did and Spielberg would have not have the clout to make the films he wanted to.

Some PODS that spring to mind...not all good...:

Spielberg directs Return of the Jedi
David Lynch's Dune is made as a tv miniseries rather than a 2 hour film (there's also Jodorowsky's Dune...but that had no chance...)
David Lynch's Mulholland Drive is made as a tv series from the Twin Peaks universe as originally planned rather than as a film
Terry Gilliam directs Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The studio leave David Fincher in charge of Alien 3
George Lucas directs Apocalypse Now
Eric Stoltz plays Marty McFly in Back to the Future
Goldcrest Films don't ruin all the good work done on Chariots of Fire by making Revolution
