Wi: Egypt Enters 1877 Russo Turkish War on Russian Side

But why? Egypt has absolutely no reason whatsoever to do such a thing. It would just be a repeat of 1840, and they know it.

Russia is involved and could aid diplomatically, ottomans are losing and unlike 1840 Egypt is not coming close to overthrow the ottomans and Egyptian territorial gains are not threatening to break the European balance of power

The thread is pretty interesting, but I just can't see it happening.

First of all, Egypt is already pretty much independent anyways.

Second, the Russians would not be able to aid diplomatically. OTL, the reason the Russians didn't completely destroy Turkey was because the British waved some warships in their face and said, more or less "now, slowly, very slowly, walk back towards that shredded armistice document and put your hands up". The Egyptians would get the same treatment, only their economy would also collpase, since it is controlled by European business intrests.

Third, Egypt's effect on the war itself will be negligible. In war, pre-1910 Turkey functioned as several countries with their own armies, since it was far too large for anything else to work. The Egyptians would not draw off troops from the Balkan front, since there would already be troops in Libya and the Levant to fight them.

Would that only be if Britain were to launch a blockade

Would Egypt be able to take the ottomans on in either one of those theaters

Why would Britain and France need to blockade Egypt? They control the economy from inside. And regardless, they would certainly be able to impose a blockade.

Yes, probably. Libya might very well fall, although I can't see the Egyptians getting past Jerusalem.

Well, France and UK might not care too much if Libya falls.

The Ottomans themselves might see Libya (which was under very loose control and a peripheral backwater) as a sideshow when they have Russia invading the core.

Basically everyone might let the Egyptians do their own little thing in their corner.

If Egyptians invade Palestine, Syria and Lebanon (and the Holy Lands) though...

Was there a clause in the 1840 peace agreement?

Yes I think there was some clause about the size of the Egyptian army and Muhammad Ali stopped his domestic reforms after the Western powers guaranteed the autonomy of Egypt. But it's some time since an read "Importing the European Army" which goes deeper into it.
