  1. YF-23 chosen by Navy

Probably similar to the F-22. Not sure the A-12 (t least as designed) could ever survive. Although I am working on an AH novel where an alternate A-12 is in service in the early/mid-90s and in combat!
  2. YF-23 chosen by Navy

I love the aesthetic of the YF-23. Imagine a Naval version would need a lot of work to support deck landings etc.
  3. Sea Lion Press New Book Releases Announcements Thread

Atomic Secrets is now available in paperback.
  4. Upcoming AH books

Not really new, but I forgot to mention on this thread that my book, Atomic Secrets was published in the summer. This is the first in a series about David Brook, and 1940s secret agent. The second is currently in review and hopefully will be published in 2024. Thanks to Infinity Wanderers...
  5. If the USA didn't develop the atomic bomb first, who would?

In terms of a British only (or at least led programme), what is the impact of wrt of the ancillary technologies. I'm thinking things like seals where Du Pont's Teflon was critical for containing UF6. Does Britain have access to this stuff as well.
  6. If the USA didn't develop the atomic bomb first, who would?

In this scenario, it has to be the UK. The Nazi program was (thankfully) a complete disaster. If the war lasts longer due to no Pearl Harbour, this also suggests no US involvement in the European Theatre, which might be a stretch given OTL German actions in the Atlantic. This means the UK are...
  7. Fewest Plausible Nuclear Powers

I think no WW's delays, but does not remove nuclear weapons. The science is known, nuclear energy was talked about pre-WW2 and given its immense potential, it was a matter of time. That leads to someone developing a bomb. I also wonder if developing later, and no use might make proliferation...
  8. Fewest Plausible Nuclear Powers

Whilst we might count 9, I think there are several countries that could rapidly (i.e. < 1 year) produce a nuclear weapon if needed. In this space, I would include Germany, Japan, Iran and South Korea. South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Brazil might plausibly be added to this as well. Extending the...
  9. Could ATGMs and A-10s stop a Soviet tank rush in the 1980s?

It is but I suspect tactics might change. Again - I think things would change pdq. There will be no concerns about health and safety testing, so ECM pods will be adapted VERY quickly. If I recall during the Falklands, and the 1991 Gulf War, aircraft were rapidly retrofitted to carry stores they...
  10. Could ATGMs and A-10s stop a Soviet tank rush in the 1980s?

In the early hours, I imagine Soviet anti-air capability would be the absolute highest priority for the NATO because they know they need their air assets to survive if they are to have a chance of stopping the onslaught. As such, whilst casualties would be horrendous, I agree with @mtpalmer1...
  11. Football WI : What if UEFA Added Salary Cap in 2009 instead of FFP

A salary cap is incredibly difficult because football is governed by national bodies as well as UEFA and FIFA. Enforcement is practically impossible as has been shown by the FFP investigations into various clubs that have in effect been 'timed-out' by excessive legal appeals. In order to make it...
  12. Football WI : What if UEFA Added Salary Cap in 2009 instead of FFP

The Bosman ruling was certainly the catalyst, although I would argue it is more agents that took over than players per se. However, to be fair, previously the power was too much in favour of the clubs - Bosman's case centred around the fact his club refused to sell him AND unilaterally cut his...
  13. How would the war have ended if Goering became fuhrer in early 1941 and there’s no German-Soviet War?

OK fair enough. My view is you would want a 4-eng. heavy to be long ranged by default given the expense you mentioned. But not quibbling about the definition per se. And completely agree about the robust nature of the machine needed to at least give them a chance of getting home with damage...
  14. How would the war have ended if Goering became fuhrer in early 1941 and there’s no German-Soviet War?

I'm not sure I completely agree. If Britain and the US needed it to fight Germany, the reverse must be true. For Germany to attack British industry in the same way the Allies attacked German, they need similar capabilities - large fleets of bombers capable of delivering heavy payloads over long...
  15. How would the war have ended if Goering became fuhrer in early 1941 and there’s no German-Soviet War?

Strangely they probably did not - certainly not decent ones. It seems the He-177 was the only aircraft coming out of the RLM's Bomber A request from the late 30s. They were also insistent on using only two engines, which was a huge problem given their issues with producing high output engines...
