Double Challenge: 40 or 60 states

Let's see.
1. Lincoln (E.Washington) (51)
2. Upper Pennensula (upper Michigan) (52)
3. Jefferson (3 southern Oregon counties & 4 northern California counties) (53)
4. West Kansas (54)
5. Baja (Baja pennesula) (55)
6. Puerto Rico (56)
7. North Missouri (57)
8. Cascadia (Southern British Columbia) (58)
9. Cuba (59)
10. Virgan Islands (60)

1. Lincoln. This state was formed in 1898 when conflicts arouse between the people living on opposite sides of the Cascade mountains. The simplist solution was to spliot the territory and so when Washington became a state, on March 11, Lincoln followed on March 12th.

2. Upper Pennensula. This state is one of the newest in the union. It ws formed and approved back in 1992. In 1991 to help boost state incomes, a tax was put in place on game animals (fish & wildlife). Many folks on the Upper Pennensula got a larger portion of thier food (than the rest of the state), and as they made less money, they precived this as an undue hardship. With this argument, as well as being geograhically seperated from the rest of the state, the Upper Pennensula became a state on July 3rd, 1992.

3. Jefferson in OTL had the paperwork ready, and it was suppoed to go to congress on Dec 8th, 1941, but the war derailed this. In This TL, the Jefferson State movement got started a year earlier, and on June 8th 1940, Jefferson became a state.

4. West Kansas became a state in 1991. It was formed from the nine western, oil producing, counties in the state. Almsot all of the tax revenue from the oil, was going to eastern Kansas. The west objected. In OTL, they had two sets of paperwork ready to go. One was an appeal for statehood, the other to declare themselves their own country, and wanted to join OPEC. In this timeline, making new states is more accepted, and the State of West Kansas was created.

5. Baja was part of the spoils of the Mexican - American war, and became a state in 1912, along with Arizona & New Mexico.

6. Puerto Rico voted to become a state on July 4th, 1976.

7. North Missouri was formed as a state, ala West Virginia, in 1863.

8. Cascadia was formed after the "54 40 or fight" incident. The British Empire was having troubles and didn't want another fight on its hands at that time, so Southern British Coumbia was sold to the US, and became a state in April 4th, 1892.

9. Cuba was freed from Spanish rule in the Spanish-American war, in 1898. After a couple of elections as a territory, Cuba, voted to become a state in May 5th, 1913.

10. The Virgin Islands wanted to become a state once Puerto Rico was granted Statehood. They voted, and after a little congress wrangling, they were granted statehood on October 1st, 1978.

Hows that work?

Jefferson (52)
Franklin (53) (Franklin is east Tennessee)
West Florida (54) (West Florida panhandle +southern Alabama and Mississippi)
Puerto Rico (55) (its part of the country now so its same shape and size)
Guam (56) (same deal as Puerto Rico)
Pacifica (57) (northern California)
Roosevelt (58) (eastern Montana)
Niagra (59) (Upper New York)
Long Island (60)

Constitutional Amendment

A constitutional amendment that required a minimum population size for states, and all the other territories would share a single set of Senators? We would have five Texas sized states in the Basin, Range, and Plains area, with a combined population of maybe twenty million. Call it Zion, Colorado, Dakota, Montana, and Kansas.
Probably you couldn't be a state until you had a population of the size of the smallest state then existing.

State of Dakota (49)
State of Carolina (48)
Greater Oregon (less Washington and Idaho) (46)
No West Virginia (45)
Maine part of Mass (44)
Vermont part of NY (43)
Lincoln vexes Brigham Young and partitions Utah completely (42)
No Alaska (41)
No Hawaii (40)

no Northwest Ordinance
North Carolina keeps Tennessee [49]
Virginia keeps WV [48], & Kentucky [47]
no Canal Bankrucptcy
Georgia keeps Alabama [46] & Mississippi [45]
Oregon territory not split, Goodby Washinton [44], & Idaho [43]
Arizona territory not Split, So long New Mexico [42]
Indian Nation territory not taken from Texas in 1845, Adios Oklahoma [41]
This is after the ACW so the two state rule doesn't apply
State of Dakota , no North or South [take your pick] [40]

51. Franklin, Western Kentucky. Formed in 1782, it was the 14th state to ratify the constitution.

52. Jefferson, Michigan Penninsula. Formed in 1804, part of the North West Territories.

53. Roosevelt, western Montana. In 1904, it was decided to divid Montana into two states, Montana and Roosevelt.

54. Sequyha, West Texas. In 1863, west Texas broke away from rest of Texas to form the Free State of Sequyha.

55. Omaha, easter Nebraska. In 1859, the eastern part of Nebraska voted to break away from the rest of Nebraska Territory.

56. Antilles, Vrigin Islands. The US received all the Vrigin Islands, and orgainzed it into the Territory of the Antilles.

57. Orleans, southern Louisiana. Territoriy formed in 1804. It, and along with Louisiana became states in 1812.

58. Lincoln, northern California. In 1869, the northern prt of California elected to form their own state of Lincoln,

59. Niagra, areas of New York. This small area of New York voted to seeced from the rest of the state in 1893.

60. Arlington, Washington D.C. This is the capital of the United States and surrounding area.

My go at 60 states

Here's my attempt at 60 states:
more states formed during Northwest Ordinance period- Transylvania, Vandalia, Lacustria in old northwest (53)
East and West Florida during Spanish cession to USA in 1800s (54)
Houston state carved off from western Texas during ACW (55)
Cuba purchased from Spain in lieu of SAW by late 19th C, gradually attains statehood (59)
Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa (60) all become states by mid-20th C alongside Hawaii and Alaska

Going to 60 States.

51) Lincoln -- Northern CA & some of OR
52) West (or North) Michigan
53) West Florida -- Panhandle is seperate state
54) Gotham -- Basically the City of NY breaks away from the state (this was discussed around the 1860's).
55) Zion -- State formed out of piece of UT by break away Mormons
56) Las Vegas -- Formed when the rest of Nevada breaks away.
57) Baja -- Southern CA
58) West TX
59) Jefferson -- formed out of North/South borderline States in the West which were divided during the civil war and named after the Godfather of states rights.
60) Columbia -- Wash DC gets statehood.

40 States done in 2 events

49) West Virginia never breaks away from Virginia during Civil War
48-40) The territory acquired via the Louisiana Purchase remains a territory until fully explored. Then it becomes 1 state. This eliminates LS, AR, OK, MO, IA, ND, SD, NE, MT, and WY. It turns it into 1 state ... Louisiana. This would be worth just around 55 electoral votes today ... or roughly the same amount as California.

Here's some more ideas:

61. Charlotian, area of Wisconsion. An area of the Northwest Territories, Charlotian became a state in 1801.

62. Vandalia, West Virginia and Kentucky. It was a territory until 1802, when it became a state. In 1832, it was renamed to that name of Adams.

63. Cumberland, southern Kentucky, northern Tennesse. Area around the Cumberland River. It, along with Franklin, Kentucky, Tennesse, and Vandalia were carved out of the same area.

Here's a map of my 60 states (Alaska, Hawaii, and Antilles are not shown). Blue means new states, and bright green means states with different names.

1. North Dakota to Dakota

2. South Dakota to Roosevelt

States.GIF

60 States.

Let's see, in 1848, Texas divides itself into 5 separate states (as I believe was allowed under the annexation agreements)

(1) West Texas
(2) Houston
(3) Gulfport
(4) Crockett
(5) Austin

Congress admits Oklahoma in 1889 as two states as was proposed by the Five Civilized Tribes

(6) Oklahoma
(7) Sequoyah

California formally reorganizes and is readmitted to Union as two states because of cultural differences between Northern and Southern California.

(8) South California
(9) North California

USA annexes Baja California after Mexican War, becomes territory in 1850, admitted as state in 1905

(10) Lower California

You know thats bass ackwards dont you? Theodore Roosevelt spent his time in North Dakota, why rename South Dakota the state of Roosevelt then? Shouldnt it be North Dakota renamed that

Ahhhh...people? I like your ideas, but I did say same size and shape, ie same borders.

Plymouth as a state

Actually, I'll reconsider 1 of my options- take out Cuba from this equation and substitute Plymouth colony, which remains a separate colony after 1675-76 and ATL doesn't have to merge into Massachusetts. Therefore, 7 New England states instead of 6 OTL ?

Add the 10 Canadian Provinces. Have the POD occur during the Great Depression. At this time Canada consists of 9 Provinces, this takes us to 57. Newfoundlands joins in 1949 Alska and Hawaii in 1959.

No Nunavut. North West Territory (NWT) split into 3 territories based on it's districts after the districty of Yukon was split off to become it's on territory. That gives us the territories of Yukon, MacKenzie, Keewatin, Franklin and Greenland (bought from Denmark for same price and year as Alaska, $7.2 Million) all future states when population hits 100,000.
