Michigan-Ohio War Actually becoem a war, and Michigan wins

"Never in the course of my life have I known a controversy of which all the right so clearly on one side and all the power so overwhelmingly on the other." So said President Adams of the Michgan-Ohio War.

For the Whole Story

Michigan territory started at a survey line the joined the bases of Lakes Michigan and Erie. THis was also Ohios northren border. Basically there were two diffrent versions of these lines, one giving the Toledo Area To michgan, and the other Giving the Toledo Area to Ohio. Michigan Territory established townships in the Toldo strip, and so did Ohio. Basically the Two states went to 'War' with eachotehr over who owned toledo

The two states sent millitas to go expel the other states officials in 1835. The two armys never saw eachother, and the only woond was a stabbed leg.

In oreder for Michigan to join the Union, they had to give up Toledo (but they got the UP).

What if Michigan wasnt content with this agreement, and took Toledo by force? Would Michigan still be admited to the US at some poit, or exist as a rouge state?

It could be very interesting seeing an Ohio/Michgan war. Perhaps things get really nasty with the Congress siding with Ohio and Michgan calls in the British to aid them in their fight.

Well now there are a lot of people in Michigan that are willing to lose the war if they would (that is Ohio ) take Det.

Well, where do the other states' loyalties lie, and what would they do ? Could this little war between Michinganders and Ohioans spark into a potential dismememberment of the Union during the mid-1830s ?

BTW, i actually know an American missionary couple back in Alice Springs. the guy being from Ohio and the lady from Michigan, so such marriages in this TL wouldn't be possible, huh ? :)

the Ohians are enslaved and michigan retreats to its borders now with many slaves. Michigan ends up being both more relient on slavery than south carolina(do you realize how much labor you'd need to have available to make cotton a viable crop on the UP or anywhere in michigan for that matter?) and more strident about slavery. The ACW is probably delayed to 1864 since lincoln would win one less state. Either that or he wins and michigan ends up joining the CSA but is the first to be crushed.

And if you can't tell I'm kidding kindly go die.

As much as it pains me to say, Michigan would have been crushed by Ohio in any extended skirmish. The Port of Toledo was far too valuable for Ohio to not fight for tooth and nail, especially once the Erie canal was finished. When the border "war" occured, Michigan had something between 100,000 and 150,000 citizens, which included some native americans. For the most part, they were spread out far and wide, and wouldn't be able to match any significant Ohio force.

One situation that could have occured, that isn't entirely inplausable, is the Ohio militia marching well into Michigan, as they plan to march to Detroit, and are ambushed and slaughtered in the dense woods by a mixture of Michigan militia, farmers, and traders. If the defeat was significant enough, maybe Ohio backs down and cedes the Toledo territory.

I don't belive that the Michigan territorial government would ever request British assistance. The citizens of the territory at that time were fiercely independant, and had a strong dislike of government, so that last thing they would want is being reintroduced to being governed from afar by the Crown.

@Straha: Michigan was a giant forest until well into the late 1880s, even with the lumber industry. Plus, our soil is filled with clay, and not suitible for very many crops, especially cotton. And I remember from Michigan History, that the only slavery in the state was old fur traders that had Native Americans as "slaves", although they were not really treated as such.

I was just kidding Sheesh.

You didn't highlight the blank space at the end of my post? YUou culdn't tell from the insane sytatements like "viability of cotten needing alot of manpower".

It is too early in the morning to detect sarcasm. And I have seen weirder things be pushed on these boards than planting cotton in Michigan.

I just tried to find online verification, but I remember reading somewhere that someone here in Michigan tried to sue to keep a slave even after the 13th admendment, because he had inherited some 80 year old native american slave, and said it was legal by the Northwest Ordinance.

And, I personally thank the US Congress of 1836 from excluding Toledo from my great state, and granting us the full of the Upper Penninsula, so we can enjoy their many Indian Casinos, strange isolated small towns, and Bears that drink beer.

Well... As long as we of the Upper Peninsula don't get stuck with Wisconsin, I'll be happy with this arrangement. =p
Michigan was given Yooperland as compensation for its losses to Ohio...
