WI: Fremont/Banks 1856?

What if Nathaniel P. Banks were Fremont's Vice-Presidential choice in 1856 instead of ex-Senator William L. Dayton? Would the former Know-Nothing Speaker of the House be able to get a good deal of the American Party to vote for him? Would he be able to get the nomination away from Fillmore? Or would this doom the ticket even more as Bank's Knownothingism (totally a word, don't care what spellcheck says) scares away some moderates and labels the Republicans as just another Know-Nothing Party?
