What would have happened if the Protectorate of South Arabia had been allowed its UN referendum?

The Protectorate of South Arabia was originally a British protectorate that did not join the Federation of South Arabia (what would become South Yemen). The constituent kingdoms were originally promised a UN referendum on their future but communists invaded and essentially put an end to such a notion.

What would have happened if communist forces hadn't invaded or the Aden Emergency hadn't happened?

Would the protectorate be viable? Would it still collapse and be absorbed by South Yemen? Would it join Oman? I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this.

Additionally, is this one of those "no matter what, it becomes part of x country" scenarios or could there be a different path for the protectorate?
