What If: Sam Brannan never makes "Calistoga"

For those that do not know, starting in 1859, Sammuel Brannan started buying up land to build a dream resolt of his that would become known as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calistoga,_California] "Calistoga" He paid for a rairoad to the location as well as spent over 3,000,000 (in 1860 $) to construct hotels, spas, bars, and dance halls.

The construction was the biggest buissnes failure of his life and he never regained the money spent. It was a turning part as after that, he continued to lose money on increasingly risky ventures.

So... What happens if he has a change of heart and never builds it all? His brother "John Brannan" was against the plan, if he talked Sam around to see reason, the town is never built...

But, while it was a Huge flop for Sam, it opened up the Napa Valley to development. Robert Louis Stevenson moved there in 1880 and wrote some of his most famous books there. The town itself soon boomed as Silver and Mercuy was found and mined.

If Brannan never builds it, how else might history change?
