What does a joint US/USSR moonshot in the 60s look like?

I suspect Kennedy would wait until after 1964 to make such a proposal when he is reelected. By now the US is probably bombing Vietnam so tensions there may kill the idea completely.

If somehow the Vietnam War is delayed, Kennedy will call for a summit to meeting with Bresnev to discuss the idea. He will then have to delay the Apollo program and move for Congress to agree to a move like this. It may take until the end of his second term to get such a deal brokered.

The rocket is American made, the module is a combination of American and Soviet technology. Sometime in the early 1970's, the mission launches from Cape Canaveral because the Soviets don't have adequate landing facilities for a mission. It signals in an earlier version of detente between the USSR and the West. There is an increased effort to fund internal endeavors in space. The development of space technology might actually be slower by a few years because the powers decide to wait and cooperate together instead of compete.

All of it will simply be destroyed like OTL once the Soviets invade Afghanistan in 1979 with the same amount of technology developed.

With a PoD in 1963, there is a good chance the situation in Afghanistan never develops or the Soviets react to it differently and there is no invasion...

And would Vietnam really impact a join program so much?
