How plausible would an English (or Scottish) Colony around the Cape of Good Hope, either started from scratch by the English, or conquered from the Dutch, be between 1585 and 1755?

Could Raleigh and/or the London Company of Adventurers have become interested in the Cape in addition to North America?

Related AH challenges:

Founding settlers or proprietors of one or more of the 13 colonies of the North American Atlantic seaboard set up colonies in southern Africa instead, resulting in

A Pilgrim or Puritan Commonwealth in South Africa

A South African colony called Maryland, Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Georgia being set-up

The English doing it as a stopping point on the voyage back and forth to India is highly plausible. They could also take it from the Dutch if you get the right war.

The Americans doing it is completely implausible. They had virgin soil next to them they were interested in. Why would they bother attempting it thousands of miles away?

Maybe if American merchants were prominent in trade to India?

Oh, what I meant to say was settlers and proprietors from England, not from the American colonies, making southern Africa their destination/target, instead of land in America. Or, the King offering land grants in southern Africa to people he owed money or political debts like William Penn or the Duke of York.
