Peshwehr Lancers Redux: Latin America

I've been thinking that it might be a good idea to do a more careful look at the impact of The Fall on Latin America. I have had occasions in the story of Hawaii and India to from time to time deal with some of the nations of Latin America. But I thought that perhaps a more indepth look might be a good idea.
I probably will not deal with Mexico except in regard to its involvement in Central America and the Caribbean .
When The Fall Happen a lot of the Countries of Latin America were ill-prepared to deal with what happen. Some nations rose to the occasion while others used the oppournity to begin a war of conquest.

The Fall had an overwhelming impact on the world. The Caribbean saw the might of tidal waves that devastated Cuba and the Bahamas. Islands disappeared under the impact of tital waves that were up to a hundred feet or more. The impact on Hispaniola and Puerto Rico was not as bad but Jamaica also took some damage. Mexico suffered less under the impact and damage to the nations of Central America was as bad as a hit from a hurricane. As one headed into South America the impact from the initial impact of the FALL was less but still the Earth's climate suffered bringing cooler summers and colder winters. The Fall also brought an opportunity for a group of amphibious individuals to rebuild the Empire that had once existed after the Independence from Spain. A group of wealthy individuals in Columbia combined with eager Military officers struck into Venezuela and toppled that government. Merging the two countries into One. The new nation called Neuva Granda. It took control of the former British and Dutch colonies on the mainland and moved on to conqurer Equador.. The effects of The FALL then slowed the next move.

There were several other countries in South America that had potential to be great regional powers. Among them was the Portuguese speaking Empire of Brazil. A branch of the Royal Family of Portugal sat on the throne. Forunately the Emperor realized that to survive the time the Monarchy and Brazil would need to change. He made a series of changes. Making the nobility Heridity and thus cementing its loyalty. Brazil began to build a Military capable of dealing with threats. The Imperial Brazilian Army clashed with Argentina over Urguary . Forunately for Brazil it came out on top in a war that lasted 4 years.

Brazil began a mission to rescue the people of Portugal. And so began an effort that started in the 1870s and which over time would change into the rebuilding of Portugal. Brazil would oversee the former Portuguese Empire in Africa and would eventual connect with the Kingdom of Hawaii. It would begin a friendship which would grow.

The Central American Republic emerged from the Fall as a way to deal with the threat from Mexico and Neuva Granda. Thus Guatemala, Honduras El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica became the Central American Republic. It was pattern after the United States Having an elected President and Vice President and a bicameral legislature. Unfortunately it lack much of an industrial base thus it sought allies. Hawaii in the late 19th Century was looking for resources. It had cobbled together an industrial base and refugees from Canada and the US had helped to expand its knowledgeable worker base. Thus it was the Hawaiians who proposed the construction of a Canal . The Canal would allow the Hawaiian to seek resources located elsewhere. It was a project that took time to complete nearly 15 years before everything was finished and shipping was able to move. The process of building the Canal lead to the construction of railroads and roads as well as telegraph and latter telephone lines

Despite The Fall the government of Chile. Peru and Bolivia went to war with one another in the 1880s in the War of the Pacific. The result is that Chile emerged victorious against Bolivia making territorial gains. But Peru weaken by the Fall and attacks from Neuva Granda lost territory to Bolivia thus asuring that country continued to have an outlet to the sea.. Still it was the last military move by Chile and Peru. Bolivia made the mistake of a border skirmish with Brazil and got hit back hard. This resulted in the fall of the government and some peace and quiet.

Brazil was spending the remaining years of the 19th Century building up its industrial base. Its contact with the Kingdom of Hawaii lead to a growth in trade between the two nations. Hawaii had made a lot of regress in manufacturing and in healthcare. The result was the University of Hawaii and the Royal College of Hawaii helped to train doctors and nurses. It aslo sold equipment allowing Brazil to manufacture things that it had not done before. The Brazilian Army and Navy gained weapons that Hawaii had developed.

Hawaii's Oil Company had signed exploration deals with the government of Neuva Granda. In addition Hawaii did assist that country in completing a second canal across Panama despite the fact that it was running one in the Central American Republic.

Hawaii established an excellent relationship with the Empire of Brazil. The countries worked on a number of joint projects designed to improve trade and one another s economy. Hawaii also established a relationship with Neuva Granda which allowed Hawaiian companies to drill for oil and Natural Gas. Hawaii needed a source of minerals and materials to feed its industry. Thus the two countries reached agreements on trade. Hawaii having built the American Canal in the Central American Republic became the country that Neuva Granda turned to when it canal ran into construction problems

Hawaii managed to establish good relations with at least three of the nations of South America. It however because of its relationship with the British Empire found that it had problems with Argentina. The Argentinians however continued to claim the Falkland Islands despite the fact that the only people living on the islands were all settlers of English extraction. By the late 1890s it had been nearly a century since anyone who spoke Spanish had lived on the islands. Hawaii maintained a military force on the island to help the British out since they were still stretched thin defending the Empire.

As the 20th century began the effects of the Fall began to loosen its hold on the Earth and the climate began to move slowly back to normal. Neuva Granda had stopped tits push to the south. A decision had been reached that it was better to develop and unite what they already had rather than over extend themselves and risk a collapse. The two nations that seemed to have the most problems were Bolivia and Paraguay. Brazil let it be known that it would oppose any nation that sought to conqueror eith of these two nations.
Argentina and Brazil had fought a series of border conflicts. The Argentians had made sure that they did not push the Brazilians too far as they realized that the Imperial Brazilaian Army was a formible opponet. Combined with its friendship with Hawaii and the British Empire it was felt that the time was not right to go to war. Brazil let the Argentians know that they would support Britain in any conflict.

As the 2oth Century progressed there was more industrial growth in South America. Neuva Granda used its oil revenue to fund improvements to the infrastructure of the country as well as the modernization of the military. Chile used its resources to insure its security. Argentina saw a growth in its economy but the 20th Century also saw the growth of a National Socialism Style of Government. The result was that the government looked for an issue to which divert the people's attention. That issue was the Falkland Islands. Despite the fact that there were no Hispanic settlers on the islands and the last one to live there had left more than 100 years ago the Agentian government continued to press the issue.

During the late 19th Century Hawaii support Rebel groups in the Yucatan Peninsula and Southern Mexico bordering the Central American Republic is fighting a war of independence from the dictatorship in Mexico City. With arms and advisors the two insurgent movement succeeded in gaining independence. Hawaii, the Central American Republic, Jamaica and Neuva Granda all recognized the Independence. The Enpire of Brazil joined the group in 1900.

The two independent Republics were thriving. Hawaii had assited them in building up a functioning infrastructure and training doctors and Lawers. As a result of the contact there were a lot of educated people that spoke Hawaiian English in addition to Mayan or Latin American Spanish.

In Bolivia a Coup took place in the 1970s that brought a different sort of government to power It was a government tat was spouting ideas that seemed to be hostile to the majority of countries in Latin America. The country next mounted a coup in the remains of Peru and annexed it to Bolivia. It was the attack on the Prime Minister of Hawaii by Terrorist that lead to a variety of nations banding together to wipe out a terrorist threat. Intelligence lead Hawaii and Britain to send a Special Forces Detachment into the region. What they found set off alarm bells and caused Neuva Granda to Mount a large scale Military operation to liberate Peru
